We stopped here during a day trip to Howth after leaving another restaurant that failed to take our drink order after sitting for 30 minutes. You might say we accidentally stumbled into Mamos, but it turned out to a highlight of our trip.
Firstly the service is phenomenal. We were greeted by a server and a hostess despite the restaurant being quite busy as we arrived during dinner hours. We were offered a seat on the front patio and our server, (shout out to Dean!) quickly came out to take our drink order. He was very personable and helpful and made an immediate connection. He explained the menu, made thoughtful recommendations, and showed great service all around. He also mentioned another server had grown up in Arizona, from which we were visiting. This server (shout out to Ian!) came out to pay us a visit and was also very kind, engaging, and a pleasure to meet. Unfortunately we didn't catch her name, but the hostess that initially seated us returned for a quick chat and she was also a lovely person. Needless to say the service was exceptional.
Now to arguably the most important part - the food. The menu here changes frequently, presumably to keep things fresh and interesting. Our experience was that and more. I had sika (venison) and my girlfriend had a lobster linguine. Each dish was fantastic.
The venison was very tender and juicy. The accompanying sauce was rich, savory and flavorful. There was also a lighted breadly onion filled with a type of cream sauce that had a wonderful flavor but i cant recall exactly what it was. Regardless it blended very well with the other sauce and was a great compliment on top of the roasted potatoes Dean suggested we order with our meal. Can't really go wrong cooking potatoes, but the chef here at Mamo found a way to make them stand out by giving them a perfect outer crispiness that didn't go so far as to overcook them. I loved this meal.
The linguine was also clearly fantastic as it lasted only a few short minutes on my girlfriends plate. She loved the taste of the lobster and the sauce on top. The hints of preserved lemon added a nice touch.
Last but undoubtedly not least we finished with a Passion fruit pavlova with coconut cream whip and and what seems like a Passion fruit sort of sorbet as the base. The meringue chips on top provided a great crispy texture and were an excellent compliment to the coconut cream and sorbet. We didn't take a picture of this one because we simply forgot and just attacked it so quickly 😅. So good. We missed the opportunity to pass along our appreciation while we were there - so please give our compliments to the chef.
Every aspect of this chance encounter was great from start to finish. Id say if you find yourself in Howth you should absolutely visit, but moreso if you find yourself even remotely close to Ireland you should make a point of visiting. Not just for the incredible food but for the welcoming and friendly...
Read moreOn our trip to Howth, we spontaneously decided to start with a lunch at Mamó. We read about this place in Guide Michelin and got quite excited: local ingredients, well thought-out dishes and creative presentation. Just what we like! It was a sunny and warm day so we decided to sit on the small terrace in front of the restaurant while most other guests chose the lovely, maritime upstairs dining room. On the terrace a hidden speaker playing music on a low volume created a cozy atmosphere. The table was perfectly made and very welcoming. We were attended by who we assume to be one of the owners. She was eloquent, attentive and entertaining while keeping a polite distance to not interrupt any conversation. What stood out to me in her work was her profound knowledge of the wine list. As we wanted to do one of the cliff walks after lunch, we were limited to the open wine selection, which to our surprise did not feel like a limitation at all: the open wines are high-quality, well selected and interesting. I tried a white wine from Spain that was salty and fresh with an unexpected full body to accompany the starters and an exceptional Chardonnay from Marlborough for the main. Both went perfectly with our fish-forward meal. We started with nibbles and starters: crunchy fresh mini tarts with artichoke and peas, a langoustine carpaccio with piment d’espelette and another tart with tomatoes, ricotta and black garlic - a heavenly variety of flavors. The chicken flavored butter that was served in between the nibbles and the starters was quite intense and bit too much for us. We would have preferred something bright and fresh. The bread was very good, though, and still a bit warm when served. We loved that! As a main we shared a local sea bream with (what I remember to be) a shellfish and mussel velouté as well as a salsa verde, a side of bitter leaf salad and crunchy rosemary potatoes. The fish was perfectly prepared and deboned by the chef, crunchy skin with a smoky flavor. The velouté was deep and rich with some dill that added a bright kick. We were quite full at that point but couldn’t leave without trying the lemon curd and raspberry sundae as dessert. It didn’t disappoint! All in all, we had a wonderful experience at Mamó. This restaurant stands out in every way. I would travel here from Dublin just to experience the rest of the constantly...
Read moreI am writing to express my deep disappointment with the service my wife and I received at your restaurant, Mamós, in Howth, on 29th March. Our experience was nothing short of appalling, and I feel compelled to bring it to your attention.
My wife, who is currently 30 weeks pregnant, began feeling faint while we were in Howth. With limited parking available, we decided to seek assistance at your establishment in hopes of finding a place to rest and possibly receive some sustenance to help her regain her strength.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by the chef, to whom we explained our situation and politely requested a table. Instead of offering assistance or showing any concern, he dismissively instructed us to wait for one of the wait staff. As we waited, I noticed a basket of bread nearby and, seeing my wife's condition deteriorating, I approached the chef again and asked if she could have a piece of bread to help stabilize her until we could be seated. Shockingly, he callously replied that it was "not his problem mate" and shrugged off our plea for help.
When a waiter finally approached us and inquired about a reservation, we admitted that we had none but assured him that we were willing to wait for an available table. Despite our explanation of my wife's condition and urgent need for sustenance, the waiter callously refused her request for a piece of bread, citing that it was reserved for seated guests only.
This blatant display of indifference and lack of compassion towards a pregnant woman in distress is completely unacceptable and reflects poorly on your establishment. As patrons who had hoped for a modicum of empathy and assistance during a challenging moment, we were met with nothing but disdain and callousness.
I urge you to take immediate action to address the abysmal customer service standards displayed by your staff and to implement measures to ensure that such distressing incidents do not recur in the future. Pregnant or not, every customer deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.
I sincerely hope that you will take this complaint seriously and take appropriate steps to rectify the situation. Thank you for your attention to...
