First of all, I really want this restaurant to succeed because itâs nice to have something different in Drogheda and I wish the owners every success in it. Now that Iâve been, Iâd like to be able to tell others that itâs great too. I love Mexican food, but when youâre competing with Sally Cinnamonâs for Mexican street food, youâd want it to be good, so Iâm being super honest.
Positives: Really lovely interior, nice service and the food was brought to your table very quick, so much so that if you didnât want to spend quality time in a restaurant and just wanted a quick meal, this would be ideal (we were done in 50 minutes). The menu is full of things only Irish people would eat (so if your other half doesnât like heat, theyâll be fine). Honestly, itâs a really nice place. I had fish tacos and enchiladas and they were grand.
Now for the other side. Mexican food is incredible and really diverse. People in the north and south of Mexico donât eat the same things. I have no experience whatsoever in the restaurant business so I can imagine that the owners are doing their best to try and make as much authentic food as possible using the best local ingredients. In saying that, the menu is boring. The starters are Mexican street food and the mains all involve tortillas. Again, this is what most Irish people expect when they go to a Mexican restaurant. The things that Mexicans do eat every day and which the restaurant seems to do very well have been relegated to the bottom of the menu in the sides section. Honestly, I would put some rice, beans and corn on every plate. No one complains when you get potatoes and mixed veg with a cut of meat in a restaurant. In fact, it seems standard. Change the wording on the menu. âServed with a choice of fries/rice and vegetable side of your choice.â Also, if you did put tamales and mole on the menu, people probably wouldnât go for them. I get that itâs still early days for the restaurant.
There was no option to add heat. A habanero chilli is spicy but the barbacoa flautas had no heat with the habanero sauce. Again, I totally understand that cooking for Irish people is a pain, which also explains why the nachos and chimichangas were on every table. Mexico is famous for its chillies. The corn tortillas felt a little underdone too.
The service felt really rushed and I felt like it was a case of us coming together, eating our food and then leaving as soon as we could. Waiters were nice and probably too good at their jobs, but for me, it was too fast to be an enjoyable evening.
Really wish you the best of luck, but I wonât come back unless the menu excites me. Oh, and try putting micheladas on the...
Read moreSuch a lovely spot, and I'm delighted there's a Mexican restaurant/bar like this in Drogheda!
The food was amazing, I highly recommend the nachos & enchiladas!
The service was top notch, and the atmosphere was so enjoyable. At no point did I feel like I was being rushed out, we were so well looked after by all staff! Top quality tunes also!
The Margaritas were unbelievable! đ I tried all the flavors (Lime, Mango, Strawberry & Passionfruit), they had the option to have them on the rocks or frozen, and my favorite was the frozen strawberry margarita! My girlfriend had pstar martinis all night and she thought they were amazing also!
Shuey was so sound and went out of his way to get feedback from all customers and from chatting with Shuey he informed us that the restaurant and bar is only going to grow and get better, and with the plans he has in mind I can't wait to see just how much better it gets!
I would highly recommend everyone to go out of their way to try this restaurant just for the atmosphere and experience itself, if you've never had Mexican food or are curious to do so I can't recommend a place more to try than Gringos...
Read moreOverpriced and underwhelming. We ordered starters & main courses as a group of 4. When we sat one of our place settings was missing a fork (lack of detail) and the only beer on offer was Estrella (Spanish not Mexican) The nachos were mediocre at best, particularly the chicken which was very watery and left a watery mess at the bottom of the bowl. The mains were less than impressive. I ordered fajitas which came on a hot plate that wasnât steaming / sizzling as it is in every other restaurant. One of us ordered tacos which were so oily the taco actually fell apart on the plate and had to be scooped up with a fork.
The chicken wings were so spicy they could not be finished. We declined dessert due to the limited options and expense (no churros in a Mexican restaurant?)
Service was ok, took a while to get a second drinks order in. Margaritas were very disappointing for a âMexicanâ restaurant, very sugary and not strong.
Will not...
