The hotel was recommended to us by people, who live in Chiavenna, and they told us to request rooms at the more quiet backside. Booking through internet was easy, but we got no reply regarding the room.||||The hotel is close to the railway and bus station, but also to the old center of this pretty Alpine town. When checking in we repeated our request for a room at the back. The man in charge took his time, but then managed to get us one, which is not facing the rather noisy front. The room - unlike some others - had no balcony, just a French window with railings. The view towards the mountains and the San Lorenzo campanile was superb though.||||The room was bare, modern and rather small. It was hard for two people to move between bed and wardrobe. The mattress of the bed was excellent. A reading lamp on one side of the bed wasn't functioning. After our second request at reception to have it fixed, it was put in order. With the big wardrobe and drawers by the bed the storage space is adequate. There is also a long desk against the wall, but with no light. Some people might miss tea and coffee making facilities.||||The bathroom had a bidet, as so often in Italy, and a hydromassage shower cabin with seating, which was all in all too narrow to move around. There were two small bottles of combined body and hair wash gel, which were replaced, when empty. The room was very clean and the room service excellent.||||The hotel also has a restaurant on the ground floor, where from 7 to 10am breakfast is served. There was a quite big, very Italian buffet, with plenty of sweets, but also fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals. In one corner were high quality bread, cheese and ham, but as so often in Italy no eggs. What I didn't particularly like was their coffee from the machine.||||Chiavenna is worth a visit, also as a starting point for many excursions and for tasting Valtellina food and wine in one of the crotti. The San Lorenzo hotel is a very convenient, no-fuss place to...

Read moreWho would thought that my greatest italian dining experience would be here? We found this local restaurant by mistake after trying two other ones, which were closed. By the moment you walk in, you are welcomed with smiles. Some of the staff speak English, which was great. The menu is in Italian only, but you can search pictures online or even google them and see the pictures. I had a tagliata di manzo and it was the best dish I had in Italy. My other friends also agreed, all the food provided was delicious, beautiful composition and tasteful. Apart from that, the waitress Laura was fenomenal with us, the attention she gave us is something you don't see nowadays, and I'm sure she is like that with everyone else. Thank you all of you for this experience, if we ever come back to Chiavenna we will visit you every day! Who would thought that my greatest italian dining experience would be here?
