My wife and I popped into Sesto on Arno for a late-night drink on our honeymoon. What an unfortunate mistake we hope others can avoid. Sure, the view is what you'd expect from the sixth or seventh floor of a building. But the service was beyond atrocious---it was exploitative.
We were shown to a table but weren't given any menus. After our patience wore out, I approached the bar to order drinks: a glass of "house" prosecco for my wife and a glass of "house" red wine for myself. When the drinks arrived, I joked to my wife that they appeared to have been measured with a thimble. Two or three sips later and they were gone, so I walked back up to the bar to order a second round. Another prosecco for wifey and another house red for myself.
It wasn't until I asked for the check that I discovered just how bad we'd been taken. Instead of charging us for their "house" prosecco and wine, the same staff that had "forgot" to give us menus had charged us for glasses of their premium top-shelf prosecco and wine. My eyes literally popped out of my head when I saw our bill: nearly 80 Euros for two glasses of so-called "house" prosecco and wine.
"There must be some mistake," I said. "No," said the staff, "you ordered premium top-shelf drinks."
"Excuse me," I sheepishly corrected, "I actually asked for 'house' prosecco and wine. Normally, that means bottom-shelf, not top-shelf. There must be some mistake."
"No," repeated the staff, "the bartender says you ordered top-shelf, and our prices are on our menu."
"I'm sorry," I responded, "that's wrong. There must be some misunderstanding. I specifically asked for 'house' drinks. And no one ever gave us menus or asked to serve us, which is why I went to the bar to order drinks. Please, is there anything you can do to help correct this mistake?"
"No," said the staff, "unless you'd like us to call the Polizia...."
If there is any good to come from this God-awful experience, I hope it's sparing our fellow travelers from a similar...
Read moreWe are staying at the Westin and came to check out Sesto, as the hotel’s dinner outlet, right after check in. To say we were impressed would be a huge understatement!
The views are phenomenal! Sesto hosts a beautiful terrace in the sixth floor, which opens fantastic landscape of Florence. Honestly, just the views would be enough for me to come back here, but… the food was also amazing!!! Our compliments to the chef.
I tried tagliatelle with rabbit and truffle which happened to be THE BEST PASTA I’ve tried in Italy so far, and my husband had beef with asparagus, which was tender, juicy and just perfectly cooked. For dessert we got coconut mousse which was yummy.
The service was impeccable, with all staff members working as a team and making sure that there is never a crumb on our table and we always have everything that we need :) Special THANK YOU TO EMMA for taking excellent care of us and to CHIARA, a lovely hostess who helped us with other recommendations for the city.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND and we already have a reservation for our next dinner here.

Read moreMy favorite rooftop in Florence. The sunsets are amazing. Late nights are also the perfect way to end a day in Florence. Heading up there between peak hours would be the best tip to ensure the best experience.
Here's the deal... The top floor of the hotel. Non-guests are welcome. Two sides with a giant bar in the middle. The bar side is open all day. The city views here are unmatched. Extensive wine and cocktails are available with upgraded bar food. Pro tip: with the bar side open all day; mid-afternoon and late-night can find it nearly deserted...that's when the place is at its best.
I immediately walk in and head left to the bar side and hope one of the two or three tables on the far left outdoor balcony is available. Grab immediately. Even late at night with the heaters and a blanket that they provide... the views are amazing and the setting offers one of my favorite experiences every time I'm in Florence.
The restaurant is also very good and probably offers better sunset views. It specializes in tasting menus... if you have to ask how much a tasting menu at a rooftop restaurant at a five-star hotel in...
