The incarnation of a tourist trap in perfection. In my opinion, clearly stay away even if you book via The Fork with a huge discount. Take a very detailed look at the negative reviews. I could have read through the lines. (it was avoidable, take a look at the huge amount of reviewers with less than 8 reviews).
//Update one day later: Thank you for your answer. Sadly I was contacted by The Fork that you marked my visit as "No-Show" leading again to problems. That is very very interesting since I paid with the fork app and have the payment registered. I would advise use you to correct this, because otherwise one could think that the bill should not show up, but I am sure this is not the case and it was again only a mistake from your side. Please correct it, so that both sides can finally move on.// //Update four days later: Finally after escalating this fraud to the VIP The Fork Support, they increased the pressure and the restaurant did not flag the reservation after 4! corrections as no-show. Biggest tourist trap I ever encountered.
But before we start, thanks for the moral support of the very friendly dutch couple that shared the exact same experience next to us and the brits later on with whom we could rescue 10 other persons from sitting down in this trap. We were heroes.
I will memorize this evening for a long time. About myself: Having eaten in already hundreds Italian restaurants in the last 20 years (from Michelin to simple Osterie), this must have been the worst service ever met. Simply choose randomly a restaurant at the port at it will be better. Standard question: Frizzante or naturale? Of course they bring you the more expensive frizzante water instead of the standard Ferrarelle or Lete listed in the menu (water was later removed completely from the bill). My reaction was to directly skip the wine, as a matter of principle. From this point we stayed focused to be not surprised by more serious scams. Secondi arrived, no joke, 10 seconds after taking the plates from the primi that were taken while still eating to increase turn over at every table. We saw it several times. Like being fed on a farm (comment from the restaurant: that is normal, people like to eat fast) Mood was terrible this night across the tables: Seems like nearly every table got at least a wrong dish or a wrong bill. Bill was, of course, wrong. The Fork discount of 30% not taken into account (this can sometimes happen). A dish was set with 30 instead of 20 Euros before the discount in the second try :-D :-D. This seems to be a systemically scam Lead of waiters seems to know all the scams in perfection and was not irritated by any of them. This restaurant clearly underlines in the menu that the coperto does not include any service tip. Are you serious? Which service?
Then, as a compensation, we got a Limoncello served. It is better to ask before you serve since not everybody drinks alcohol. No comment was made on the Limoncello, it was simply put on the table. It was the weakest Limoncello we ever had. Everything from Deco or Carrefour was much better. Ever. But we do not take it into account since it was "for free". Sadly nothing is "for free", we lost additional minutes of our lives...
We waited 20 minutes for our bill until we could finally leave. Piove sul bagnato....
I cannot imagine how angry people could be that do not reserve via The Fork with a discount of 30% + getting additional points by reservation, paying the full price like 26 Euro for some Paccheri with a some mussels (at least this dish was honestly good).
Food in general was so-so. It was "mangiabile" but in most dishes far from a highlight especially for the very high prices they have....

Read moreThis wasn't just dinner, this was the most wonderful experience. All restaurants on Ischia are absolutely fantastic, but this was the only one we just had to return to.
Our first dinner here was terrific. Both my girlfriend and I had pasta with mushrooms, which was absolutely delicious (as expected from a restaurant named Portobello) and my girlfriend had grilled mixed seafood and I had grilled swordfish steak. Heavenly! The portions were really generous, so we were absolutely full and just envied other people their delicious-looking desserts which we didn't have room for.
Our second night we had antipasti and primo. I personally am not a huge lover of seafood (I like it, but I prefer other options), so I ordered different pasta with mushrooms, and once again, it was absolutely splendid. But my girlfriend ordered spaghetti with lobster, and that was beyond delicious.
Both times, the staff was fantastic - the head waiter remembered us from the first time, even though they are full every evening and we were just two tourists in a crowd. Both times the welcome was very warm and friendly and the service was excellent. The food and wine came quickly, but without any hurry or stress. We chatted with the head waiter for a while, as he was really nice and seemed genuinely happy to have us there. Of course it's business, but it didn't feel that way at all.
I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I wish we could visit each and every restaurant on Ischia, as I don't think there is a single bad one on the island. But I'm sure even if we did, Portobello would...
