We had perhaps our best meal in Puglia here (and we ate a LOT of good food on our trip). The food was outstanding, with traditional Apulian cuisine and quality ingredients. The setting is beautiful - we were sitting on the outdoor patio just on the outskirts of Ostuni - and, if you peak inside, the indoor dining room is just as impressive, with massive walls and a vaulted ceiling. The kitchen, also visible, is spotless and modern. Do not go if you are in a hurry! The meal is served at a very measured pace, so that you can enjoy the food and the conversation with your companions, but the servers are very patient, friendly and knowledgeable. Although the restaurant is within walking distance of Ostuni, i recommend driving as the road has no sidewalk. When we mentioned to our hostess that we were going to walk back in the dark or call a taxi, she advised us against both and then drove us back to town herself! Servizio pessimo. Siamo arrivati e i tavoli, uno per gli adulti e uno per i bambini, (prenotati con quasi una settimana di anticipo) non erano pronti. C’era un’unica cameriera per 6/7 tavoli in totale all’aperto. Nessuno all’interno. Abbiamo chiesto se si potesse iniziare ad ordinare per i bambini (tutti piccoli, max 5 anni) e ci ha detto di no perché doveva prima finire di apparecchiare. Allora armati di pazienza abbiamo chiesto se si potesse avere almeno l’acqua (all’arrivo alle 8 faceva ancora molto caldo) e la cameriera ci ha risposto di no, scocciata e arrabbiata per la nostra richiesta, aggiungendo che avrebbe dovuto prima finire di servire “il caldo” ad un altro tavolo. Dopo 20 minuti di attesa ci porta i bicchieri e l’acqua. Solo al tavolo adulti. Chiediamo di portarli anche a quello dei bambini e si infastidisce di nuovo. Uno strazio per poter avere del pane, altra attesa di 20 minuti. Per tutta la cena abbiamo dovuto lottare per avere l’attenzione della cameriera che non ha mai smesso di trattarci con aria di sufficienza, come se ci stesse facendo un favore. Per evitare ulteriori polemiche, mi sono anche alzata personalmente per riportare dei piatti sporchi dei bambini in cucina (perché altrimenti sul tavolo non c’era spazio per fargli mangiare il secondo e chissà quanto altro tempo se gliel’avessimo chiesto). Durante la cena si alza un gran vento, così forte che volavano tovaglioli dappertutto. Dopo 2 ore di vento (a cui non eravamo preparati per cui nessuno aveva portato maglioni o giacche), chiediamo la cortesia di far mangiare i dolci ai bambini all’interno. Apriti cielo. Seccatissima l’abbiamo sentita dire in cucina “muovetevi a fare i dolci a questi qua che non li sopporto più”. Per poi essere rimproverati perché eravamo troppi (8 adulti e 4 bambini) e “non si fa”. Ho provato con grande calma a spiegarle che il problema non era il numero delle persone, ma solo che non potevamo prevedere che si sarebbe alzato il vento e i bambini erano infreddoliti e ha risposto che non era vero perché il vento era caldo… 3 ore di cena, lenta e logorante, trattati da cani. Da pugliese mi sono vergognata di aver portato i miei amici romani in un posto dove ero già stata l’anno scorso, pensando di stupirli piacevolmente. E invece quella stupita sono stata...

Il Fienile is a must if you’re keen to just slightly step away from the heat and bustle of Ostuni town centre. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful location amongst olive groves and fruit trees where a nice cooling breeze drifts up while you watch the sunset. The food was fantastic, lots of home grown and local ingredients used to create some superb dishes. There were also a number of specials to choose from which were complimented by some excellent deserts and great wines.
