My wife and I were on our way to tour the ruins of Pompeii from Sorrento and needed a restaurant that catered to gluten free diets along the way. We found Mama Eat via the Findmeglutenfree app.
We arrived for lunch around 1230pm on Friday 9/15/25 and were surprised to find ourselves to be the only customers in the restaurant (must be due to our silly american eating schedule). The waitress directed us to a table and how to pull up the menu via QR code and took our drink order.
She returned promptly with our drinks and to take our food order.
My wife, feeling not hungry enough for a meal went with the Scugnizzielli alla Nutella and I for the Pizza Diavola.
We waited around 15-20 minutes for our food to arrive.
My wife, the nervous eater she is, made sure to verify the Scugnizzielli was gluten free when it arrived, and after receiving confirmation, dug right in. I could see on her face immediately that it was delicious. Being from the states, we're not used to so many places catering to gluten free diets, but here in the civilized part of the world... they have it mastered! I always sample some of her food to see how it is and compare it to gluten-full food. I couldn't tell the difference with her dough. It was light, fluffy, didn't turn to dust or paste in your mouth... just perfect.
Now... onto my pizza...
We'd been in Italy for 8 days at this point, making our way from Rome to Sicily. I made a promise to myself before we arrived that I was going to eat a lot of pizza, and so far, I'd held myself to that commitment. I'd tried pies at little, off-the-beaten-path, mom n pop places with only the most functional English-Italian exhchanges, and I'd had a great experience so far, so many tasty pizzas, and a handful of dissapointing/boring ones too.
Let me tell you... I was MAD when I took the first bite of my Mama Eat pizza. I was mad that I had any of the other pizzas. I was mad that I'd paid almost double for each previous pie. I was mad that I found the best pizza of my trip in a friggin MALL. Maybe it's different in Italy, but in the states, high quality food and malls are mutually exclusive from one another.
Everyone... this pizza was PERFECT. Paper thin crust that was somehow also lightly crispy, perfectly light and chewy, with a lovely char on the entire bottom of the pie, beautiful san marzano sauce with super creamy fiordilatte hand spread randomly, spicy salame that actually had spice to it(!), and beautifully fresh basil leaves to finish it off.
I couldn't believe how exceptional this pizza was. It's been almost 2 weeks and I'm still thinking about it.
The worst part of the entire visit was the fact that I couldn't take the 2nd half of the pizza to take away as we had to be travel ready after Pompeii.
When we were all set and finished, we went to the counter to pay and struck up a conversation with the waitress, bartender and manager(?) about current events and cultural differences. They were extremely welcoming and lovely and we could not have asked for better hosts to our visit. If we ever make our way through or even near to Pompeii again, stopping at this Mama Eat will absolutely be on our to-do...
Read moreWARNING - An incident occurred at Mama Eat in Maximall Pompei regarding gluten-free food safety. Despite staff being informed multiple times about severe allergies for adults and a baby, non-gluten-free food was served instead of the ordered gluten-free meal. The dish was also wrongly communicated and confirmed as gluten-free when served. The mistake was only noticed after the food had already been eaten (another waiter explained too late that gluten-free dishes come on different colored plates).
Serving regular food after repeated warnings shows a critical lack of safety protocols and staff training. For anyone with allergies, this type of failure can lead to serious health consequences. Therefore, this restaurant cannot be considered safe for people...
Read moreFriendly english speaking staff, clearly explained what was and not gluten free. Would recommend sticking to regular pasta and pizza options, these were good options. But something like breaded veal was average, large portion size but would have been happy with half as much veal and more vegetables and salad. Quite during the day but in the evening and night extremely busy even late on Sunday close at midnight. Eat in or collections, large multi...
