Antica Taverna — Restaurant in Viterbo

Antica Taverna is a rustic trattoria known for its huge cuts of dry-aged beef and wide selection of Italian wines. We came here on the recommendation of our Airbnb host.

The service wasn't particularly friendly- our waitress seemed curt, though she was the same way with other tables too, so I don't think it was just us as Americans.

I ordered the filet steak, which was just okay. My daughter enjoyed it more than I did, but I found it rather chewy- I could make a better steak with my eyes closed. On the other hand, the truffle gnocchi was absolutely outstanding- possibly my favorite dish in all of Italy (and that's saying a lot!). The sauce was rich, thick, and deeply flavored with truffle, while the gnocchi themselves were light and pillowy.

For sides, the tomatoes and beans were very good, and the salad was average- nothing special, but perfectly adequate. None of us liked the porcini mushroom side dish and left the entire dish. It was over salted and mushy. I didn't like the mushrooms that came with my steak for the same reason- the meat was undersalted and the mushrooms were inedibly oversalted.

Overall, a mixed experience: the steak didn't impress, but the truffle gnocchi alone made the visit worthwhile. Unfortunate because the steak is what theyre known for. If the waitress had been friendlier, we would have definitely...

Sono tornato alla Taverna dopo anni di assenza da Viterbo e memore di un ricordo molto positivo ho portato diversi colleghi con me. Il locale è stato ristrutturato e ampliato, conservo ancora il ricordo della gentilissima e precedente proprietaria che ci accoglieva sempre con il sorriso e con gentilezza. Purtroppo la gestione è cambiata e con essa anche il modo di accogliere i clienti. Appena arrivati abbiamo allontanato leggermente il tavolo dal muro, perché la pittura a causa dell'umidità si sbriciolava e non volevamo sporcare i giubbini. Siamo stati ripresi in modo sgarbato dalla cameriera con i capelli biondi. Durante la cena, con noi già seduti, arriva e sposta nuovamente il tavolo dicendo che era storto noi la guardiamo attoniti senza proferire parola. Abbiamo ordinato delle tagliate di Black Angus alcune da 500 g, appena abbiamo iniziato a tagliare la carne notiamo che all'interno presentava molti filamenti nervosi e grasso, con gentilezza chiedo di cambiare il coltello, faccio presente che anche quello che mi è stato portato non tagliava e per tutta risposta mi viene detto che i nervi non si tagliano ma bisogna sfilacciarli. È mancato poco che mi venisse impartita una lezione di taglio della carne, è la prima volta che mi viene detto che i nervi presenti nella carne non si tagliano, per giustificare il problema che il taglio portato al cliente è pieno di nervi e grasso in modo esagerato (su 500gr oltre 200gr era grasso). Alla visione di un altro mio collega, che aveva ordinato lo stesso taglio di carne e non riusciva a mangiarlo perché prestava più grasso della mia, chiamo la cameriera dicendo di andare in cucina e fare presente che la carne presenta qualche problema ad essere consumata e che evidentemente il taglio era molto grasso. Ho chiesto di farlo presente al cuoco e mi viene detto "al momento è occupato se vuoi vai tu a dirgli tutto". Partiamo dalla buona educazione, innanzitutto poteva essere mia figlia e si permette di darmi del tu, inoltre io sono il cliente e di certo non vado in cucina al massimo il cuoco si reca al tavolo appena libero e chiede cosa non va. Ovviamente non è successo nulla di tutto ciò, hanno continuato a darci del tu, giunti davanti alla cassa esce il cuoco dalla cucina e ci dice che i tagli di carne erano tutti uguali.Prende un pezzo di carne di lombata di manzo ed ha esclamato questa è la stessa di quella che avete ho ordinato voi, peccato che noi abbiamo ho ordinato Black Angus. Per tutta risposta gli ho fatto presente che può capitare qualche taglio di carne con all'interno un po' di grasso ma quello che è arrivato al nostro tavolo era veramente eccessivo. Tenuto conto che il cuoco era convinto delle sue ragioni, abbiamo saldato il conto augurando buona serata. Mi astengo dal riportare le opinioni degli altri colleghi basta dire che sono state tutte negative e sono rimasti...

The restaurant is really a huge surprise. From the outside you hardly notice the entrance, inside it is really ancient, stone walls, dark timber at the ceiling, a big room, but intimate at the same time. Friendly waiters and - THE BEST MEAT I HAVE EVER EATEN IN MY LIFE! I had a angus filet, my relatives a "tagliata", it was absolutely superb and well worth while to drive many kilometers to eat there. But you need to reserve your table. Even on Mondays it was really full of people enjoying "bistecca fiorentina" and other goodies. Even the sweets were very good.
