We bought tickets for the Palace of the Popes and this included the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Archeology Museum too. The lady on the ticket desk was excellent - friendly and helpful. The loggia of the palace was beautiful - an open air colonnaded building with a fountain in the middle and views across to the city walls. The other side of the loggia is now lost but what was there was still impressive. The main hall detailed all the cardinals involved in the Papal Conclave as well as some old music books saved from the library after we bombed the city in 1944. The cathedral had a gorgeous ceiling although the building itself was surprisingly plain. There were the remains of some wall frescoes by the altar and one of the chapels had the best example of trompe l'oeil we'd ever seen. The bronze plated doors were impressive too. The statues in the archeology museum really showed how poor the ones we'd seen at Sacro Bosco actually were and even the Etruscan effigies from 500BC had more realism and proportion. The number of reliquaries was impressive too, a particularly strange feature of Catholicism.

Questo maestoso palazzo, situato nel cuore del centro storico, è uno degli edifici più importanti e affascinanti della città, ricco di storia e di significato. Il Palazzo dei Papi fu costruito nel XIII secolo, durante il periodo in cui Viterbo fu sede papale. La sua architettura, prevalentemente gotica, è un perfetto esempio di eleganza e imponenza. Appena si varca la soglia del palazzo, si è immediatamente colpiti dall'ampiezza e dalla maestosità degli spazi interni. Uno degli elementi più impressionanti è la Loggia delle Benedizioni, con le sue arcate eleganti e le colonne finemente decorate. Da qui, si può godere di una vista panoramica sulla città che toglie il fiato, rendendo evidente perché questo luogo fosse scelto dai papi per le loro cerimonie e benedizioni. La loggia è anche un luogo perfetto per fermarsi a riflettere e ammirare l'abilità degli artigiani medievali. Proseguendo nella visita, si accede alla Sala del Conclave, forse la sala più significativa del palazzo. Questa sala storica fu teatro del primo conclave della storia, nel 1271, un evento che ha lasciato un'impronta indelebile nella storia della Chiesa. Le pareti spesse e le finestre strette creano un'atmosfera solenne e austera, perfettamente in linea con la serietà degli eventi che vi si svolsero. È affascinante pensare alle decisioni cruciali prese in questo luogo, e l'atmosfera sembra quasi ancora impregnata delle discussioni e delle preghiere di quei giorni lontani. La Cappella del Palazzo è un altro punto saliente della visita. Decorata con affreschi e ornamenti raffinati, offre un'ulteriore testimonianza della profonda spiritualità che permeava ogni angolo del palazzo. Gli affreschi, sebbene in parte deteriorati dal tempo, mantengono una bellezza struggente e raccontano storie sacre con un'arte e una delicatezza che lasciano senza parole. Non si può tralasciare la grande scalinata che conduce ai piani superiori del palazzo, un capolavoro di ingegneria medievale che ancora oggi impressiona per la sua solidità e il suo splendore. The Palace is in fact the residence of the Roman popes since the 13th century. A palace was built near the cathedral, which grew on the site of the pagan temple of Apollo. Incidentally, the first conclave took place in the papal residence. For three years, Catholic dignitaries could not decide on the candidacy of their next ruler. Then the captain of the guardsmen Raniero Gati turned to more decisive actions. He locked the cardinals up until they chose dad.
