When you first enter the building and walk along the corridor, you probably don't expect much. But this small restaurant, run by an elderly couple, is beautiful! She's from Hakone originally and they have many beautifully designed, handcrafted decoration items that are a specialty of Hakone.
Although the couple speaks a few(!) words of English, I think there's no English menu. If you speak Japanese, they're happy to have a conversation and they seem well educated. Both were very friendly (and were friendly before they knew I spoke some Japanese).
The sushi was very good, but for the price I would get better in Tokyo or many other coastal towns, but that's to be expected, I think.
A bit after me, while I already received my order, 3 other tourists wanted to enter. After they heard how many people they were, they turned them away. I think the official reason they gave was that they were sold out and could only do about one more customer, but I'm not sure that's true, to be honest. Could be that they don't like to handle foreigners in groups of more than 1-2 people. Or maybe they were afraid that it would take too long with 3 customers as their closing time wasn't that far off anymore.
Edit: Came here again half a year later and now there's a sign saying that a reservation is required. That's a pity. I always eat somewhere spontaneously, so I won't be able to return here anymore. It's a pity, I wanted to come back every time I'm...
Read moreOn a cold night in Asahikawa, after a long day spent enjoying onsen and relaxing, I was craving sushi. And what better place to enjoy sushi than this little restaurant not more than 5 minutes away from my hotel? Located in a quiet corridor, lit by artificial lights and other restaurants' neon signs, once I opened the door, this 寿司屋 owners warmly greeted me. I ordered sushi and happily talked to the owners, who told me some stories about their restaurant and its past. Be respectful tho: they're a bit old and can only speak Japanese, it might make them uncomfortable if you go there without understanding the language. There are plenty of foreigner friendly restaurants so it might be a wise choice to check them out first.
The sushi was delicious and pro tip: the proper way to eat it is with your hands, by dipping only the raw fish side in the soy sauce. Only very local places suggest customers to do...
Read moreWe did search a few restuarant after arriving here. This restuarant got high recommendation on google map as a local guide Ibwould like to try so we went there and met the lady inseide the restuarant at the time there was all empty table: however, the lady and the chef showed us a written sign in English: the reservation is needed in order to have a seat. The chef told me today was fully booked.
Therefore, we did not try so i cannot have full review for the taste of the food but the system required me to give some stars in order to give a review and information so I make 2 star as "no idea" for the taste and quality of the food, service and the restuarant atmosphere.
Please share some info if you are a foreigner who were used to try the food here, it would be much appreciated but I might not be able to check this out since we jave to leave the...
