Marutamagoya — Restaurant in Hakodate

So happy to have stumbled on this gem of a place today! It’s right next to the ropeway. First of all BEST soup of my life. Somehow it was better than the one made by my grandparents in my childhood. I just couldn’t believe how good it was, so good I could’ve licked the plate :). Second of all when we left my 5 year old started crying, when I asked why, she said “because I want to go to this restaurant AGAIN”. And she rarely likes restaurants. This little house is all about the cultural fusion/exchange between Japan and Russia so you will see some unique items there. The staff is very sweet and kind and helpful. The owner speaks fluent English, a rarity in Japan, she was so cool and interested, clearly a multi-talented person. She explained many things to us and we were very happy to meet her. An adorable restaurant that specialises in Russian food. We ordered a set menu that comprised borscht, stroganoff, piroshki and a drink of choice, topped with a lovely walnut dessert. It was honestly our first time eating Russian food, but we loved every dish! All the staff were extremely nice and polite, explaining and recommending us what we could try! Excellent quality and very authentic Russian cuisine! We enjoyed the stuffed lamb and tomato pies so much that we got two more for takeout. The decor is fanastic and made us feel like we were in a Russian grandmother's cottage. The owner speaks English well, too.
