Nijukken Zaka Slope is one of Hakodate’s most scenic streets, stretching straight from the hillside down toward the sparkling Hakodate Bay. The name “Nijukken” means “20 ken” (about 36 meters), referring to its impressive width, making it feel grand yet peaceful. The slope is paved and lined with charming buildings, creating a perfect blend of old-town atmosphere and coastal views. In winter, snow blankets the road, turning it into a postcard scene, especially during the evening light-up. It’s an easy walk from the Motomachi area and a great photo spot for capturing both the bay and the city’s unique historical vibe. Whether you visit in the green of summer, the colors of autumn, or the romance of winter, Nijukken Zaka offers a view worth the climb.

「二十軒坂」はその名の通り、道幅が二十間(約36メートル)もある。函館の街歩きといえば、なんといっても「坂」。海と山のさまざまな景観を演出し、多彩な歴史的建造物とともにあり、散策していてワクワクする。函館山のふもとには、山頂に向かってほぼ平行して、19の坂がある。 明治館から函館山山麓からや朝市まで続く坂で、広い道幅で距離もあり歩きごたえも十分ある。坂は一面に広がる石畳や、道の両脇にたくさん立ち並ぶ和風・洋風建築物など、見た目も華やかな坂だ。 明治12年(1879)の大火後、防火帯としての役割としてこれほどの広さの道路が作られたそうだ。当初は、木が多く茂っていたことから「緑坂」、または付近に大工や工人が多く住んでいたために「大工町坂」と呼ばれていたらしい。
坂を登りきったとこからの景色は一望の価値がある。冬季になるとイルミネーションが輝き、観光スポットの金森赤レンガ倉庫まで続くイルミネーションの世界を楽しむことができる。
