Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward — Attraction in Hakodate

A devastating fire in August 1907 resulted in the loss of over 12,000 homes, almost half of the city, including the public meeting hall where citizens congregated. Despite suffering personal losses in this disaster, Soma Teppei, a prosperous merchant, generously donated ¥50,000 to aid the city's recovery. His contribution enabled the completion of this building in 1910.

The structure, boasting a symmetrical design, serves as a testament to the Western-style architecture prevalent in Hokkaido during the Meiji period. Its upper floor features a balcony with skylights and pillars adorned with decorative capitals that accentuate the entrance and porches.

由「八幡坂」徒j步大約3分鐘可以抵達，這棟主建築與這次在青森弘前所看到的「舊東奥義塾外人教師館」或幾年前在神戸北野「萌黄の館」風格頗為相似，同為木造2階洋式建築。

建築最吸引的是跳色鮮明的配色，透過藍灰色底漆與金黃色邊漆讓建築物本體不用透過夜間的燈光也有漸層式立體效果，主建物結合當代西洋設計與日式理念並融合殖民地時代復興風格（Colonial Revival style）、喬治亞建築風格（ Georgian Architecture style ）與科林斯式風格（ Corinthian style）元素。

融入（Colonial Revival）與（ Georgian Architecture style ）乍看之下這兩種風格特色相當接近，在「公会堂」也都蘊藏著它們的身影，主要共有特色如下:

1.主建物為連棟式建築「急勾配屋根」上有「小さな屋根」與「ドーマー窓 」。

2.主建物中央入口有門廊和柱子支撐，2階「バルコニー」有欄杆裝飾。

3.主建物為2階長方形的建築，兩側「屋根」、「煙囪」與「窓台 」為對稱式設計。

4.窗戶為推拉式「上げ下げ窓」設計，惟1與2階窗戶的玻璃並非與傳統喬治亞風格相同多「格子窓」設計。

5.屋根「軒蛇腹」牆面「コーニス」有水平線板的「歯飾り」。

融入( Corinthian style )元素:

1.兩側附屬建築與中央入口的古典門柱，柱頭都有「コリント樣式」。

除了在設計靈感上運用了一些當代風格與傳統喬治亞風格強調以中心山牆為主體的作法不同，在主建物的屋根則融入許多日式元素，包含「中央」與「兩側破風」有天守閣或神社常見「棟瓦」及「棟隅」的「鬼瓦」，「小西朝次郎」將中央屋根設計縮小為極簡的「破風」但 強化兩側屋根採用「切妻破風」。

這裡的屋根是採用「瓦葺」與「五稜郭奉行所」相同，並以「桟瓦」鋪設，由於高度與角度關係並無法清楚拍攝「 軒先」上的「 軒瓦」是否有「家紋」或「 巴紋」裝飾。

另外位於主建物左側的1階木造附屬棟建物，有非常鮮明的中世紀牧場色彩(mid century ranch style)與喬治亞建築風格（ Georgian Architecture style ）元素，附屬棟建物與主建物相通可由內部「渡廊」出入。

融入（mid century ranch style )元素:

1.採用非對稱「窓台 」規劃，建築物本體為1階設計。

融入（ Georgian Architecture style ）元素:

1.在附建物的屋根上承襲了喬治亞「寄棟屋根」的作法，屋根上與主建物相同有「眉ドーマー屋根 」的「天窓 」。

2.屋根「軒蛇腹」牆面與主建物相同「コーニス」有水平線板的「歯飾り」。

3.窗戶為推拉式「上げ下げ窓」設計，與主建物不同但與傳統喬治亞風格相同，擁有6x6「格子窓」。

The rooms are kept in its traditional style. The hall is beautiful with hardwood floors and is open for rentals and events. Make sure you visit the top floor where there’s a panoramic view of Hakodate harbor.
