海鮮居酒屋 勇魚 — Restaurant in Hatsukaichi

This restaurant was such an amazing and authentic experience for me as a westerner. I only found out about it because my partner is from Hiroshima and her father used to bring her here.

From the outside it looks nothing special but I’m my experience restaurants that last for decades without relying a beautiful shopfront are successful because of the food. So I was excited to try.

Inside it is a reflection of the owner’s personality, with quaint mementos and souvenirs for decoration. The service was immediately perfect, and I knew this would be an great experience.

The food is a tapas-style and was brought efficiently with simple and beautiful presentation. And cooked to perfection.

First was a marinated sushimi, then tempura sardines, shellfish in butter sauce, yellowtail gill and at the owner’s suggestion, anago (similar to eel) to finish. Everything was amazing but the anago was a very refined flavour that balanced the oiliness, fish flavour and saltiness perfectly. The owner said he buys it from elsewhere in Japan.

Throughout this wonderful experience it is obvious that the food is made with the intention to satisfy the diner, and I regard it as one of my favourite dining experiences ever. To me these family-run restaurants are the true discoveries. Anyone can pay thousands to eat at the famous places, but they cannot bring the sense of spirit that I experienced here yesterday. I can’t wait to go back.

5 star restaurant in every aspect. We were here on a Sunday night, and it was busy with lots of local customers . After enjoying the meal here, we immediately understood why the restaurant was packed with the local customers. The food was great, the service was great. We first ordered Omakase but even though we were full, we ended up ordering extra Sashimi set and Sushi set. My daughter, who normally doesn't enjoy sashimi, loved a sashimi here. Ich schreibe selten lange Rezensionen, aber dieses Restaurant hat es verdient. Es wurde mir von einem Einheimischen auf der Fähre empfohlen. Solche Empfehlungen bedeuten immer etwas Gutes, und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht.

Das Restaurant hat einen wunderbaren Charme. Da ich leider kein Japanisch spreche, gab sich die Kellnerin große Mühe, sich mit mir zu verständigen. Dank Apple und Google war das kein Problem. In Deutschland würde ein Kellner einen wahrscheinlich gar nicht bedienen. Auch ein herzliches Dankeschön an den älteren Herrn, der sich mit mir auf Englisch unterhalten hat.

Das Essen war unbeschreiblich gut und gehört eher zur gehobenen Küche. Alles war hervorragend angerichtet, perfekt zubereitet und auf den Punkt genau. Der Salat war extrem frisch und schmeckte nach Salat, nicht wie in Deutschland, wo er oft nach nichts schmeckt. Das Sashimi war ebenfalls außergewöhnlich frisch, so wie ich es als Angler nur von frisch gefangenem Fisch innerhalb von 1-2 Stunden kenne.

Die Besitzerin schenkte mir sogar eine Mandarine und Schokolade. Soweit ich verstanden habe, stammten diese aus eigenem Anbau. Solch eine Aufmerksamkeit kenne ich nur aus einem einzigen Restaurant in Deutschland.
