It's Costco. It's amazing. I freaking love this place but have 2 very valid annoying peeves about them and one particular to this location.
Minus one star for this location becuase no gas stand. That's really too bad. The savings you can get from filling up from Costco gas easily pays for a year's regular membership in savings if that was all you used Costco for.
We have a pro membership. To make it worth it you have to spend over 200,000 a year at Costco. We EASILY spend that.
Last year I got my tires replaced on my Mx-5. So easy and cheap. One price up front. Done and done. 120,000 yen. Went to Yellow Hat for an estimate. Took over an hour. Told them exactly what I wanted and needed. They treated me like a 12 year old girl. Like I had no idea what a car was and doubted that I knew what tires I needed or wanted. Then after I was "allowed" they quoted 170,000! I said "thank you" and got up to walk out, then quickly quoted 150,000. "No, goodbye," then 120,000. BUT they needed the cash up front.! What a joke and waste of time. Tires at Costco 100% of the time from now on.
Just got our 5th LG hdtv... Costco has insane prices on LG tv. Saved 30,000 off the Amazon price. It's March 1st and we already spent 130,000 yen on things we need this year alone.
Not to mention Costco has probably single-handedly increased the protein intake of Japan by a few % points. They have so much protein options from chicken to sandwhich meat to seafood to various dairy products like awesome yogurt. Not to mention all the protein powder options at the front of the store.
Minus 1 more star for all Costco locations for their horrible bread section. It's such a tragedy. Those sugary cheap terrible dinner rolls!!! I can't even think of an equivalent it's so bad and weird. 90% of the bread they sell is those medicore dinner rolls. There are 100+ types of bread out there in the world..more! But for some reason Japanese people seem obsessed with the worst most basic bread ever made. You can't use it for anything! Costco used to be so much better about baking and selling "artisan" breads but every location, Fukuoka, kumamoto, Hiroshima have all but stopped. They have AMAZING ciabatta bread and what do they do now? Slather the most disgusting amount of garlic butter you can possibly imagine. It literally ruins the bread. I bought some, and tried scraping off the excess butter. One loaf welded about 100g of butter that I saved to cook with later. ONE loaf!!! 100grams!!! And that was just what I could get off. Went and lightly toasted the bread with the butter I could not scrape off it was still dripping all over my oven pan. Literally turns my stomach that people are are eating that stuff. It's more butter than bread and it just ruins really really good bread.
I really don't understand Japan's relationship with bread. In many ways it's opened my eyes up to the world of bread. I've actually learned so much about the world's bread through Japan's massive and varried bread industry, but in doing so I learned how wrong they do most of it!!! Like baguettes as thin as a pencil or ciabatta loafs ruined by garlic butter. Sourdough filled...
Read moreGreat customer service + high quality products at reasonable prices as long as you're happy buying in bulk. Also phenomenal return policy if you're unhappy with any products (even appliances). Food court is popular with students and baseball game going patrons as prices are very cheap e en for non members.
Lots of parking over 3 floors + validation of parking needed on game days with purchase + then free for a few hours. Busy on weekends and not empty on weekdays now as they have started to add samples on weekdays as well.
From a sustainable business perspective, I appreciate how they provide so many domestic products (more than 70%) but I wish there could be more sustainable products such as #plantbased #plasticfree #biodegradable packaging. I'd like to see some effort to reduce plastic waste such as having a reusable containers system for the baked goods which are made in location. A bin next to the parking to drop off cleaned containers for reuse would work well.
To reduce carbon impacts, offering a Vegan Burger in the food court such as beyond-burger or at least a salad without meat + cheese would be best.
To reduce waste + mess in the food court, why not reusable cups for 'here' drinks + reusable straws + lids would reduce plastic waste enormously for diners hanging out there.
Offering discount or points to members bringing own containers + straws another idea that might work, but the first step would be to ask if they need a...
Read moreThis Costco in Hiroshima is very good. I don't believe they have a gas station because of the location. Lots of parking above the store. Lots of people come here. Like the other Costco stores, you can easily go broke, saving money. The Japanese people are polite, friendly, and patient. Expatriates should be the same. You can use your out of country Costco card to enter, and you can use Mastercard for purchases. The lines for free samples are long and slow moving. The food court is outside to the right of the store exit. Really good hotdogs 🌭 and pizza 🍕 and other food deals. This food court have onion 🌰 grinders!! There are escalators going up and down from the parking area, which accommodates those big shopping carts. There's a braking system for the carts so they won't move while going up and down. There's are employees at the top and bottom to assist with getting the carts on and off. I bought a TV. The only issue I still have is the 92-page operators manual, all in Japanese. Google Translate helps a little. But I still don't have...
