💖 . A Memorable Visit to the Akafuku Main Store: Tradition and Delight in Every Bite A Long-Awaited Visit to the Akafuku Main Store A few years ago, I had a strong craving for traditional Japanese sweets, particularly the renowned Akafuku, and decided to visit the Akafuku Main Store in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. 📅 At that time, I was deeply fascinated by the allure of wagashi (Japanese sweets), and Akafuku’s reputation made it a must-visit. 🗺️ The Store’s Historic Ambiance Upon arriving at the main store, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the building. Its historical charm was palpable, with an ambiance that seemed to freeze time. The exterior, with its subdued colors, harmonized beautifully with the surrounding nature, while the interior, exuding warmth from the wood and the scent of tatami mats, evoked a sense of old Japan. 🏛️✨ As I entered the store, I was enveloped by a serene atmosphere, providing a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It felt like stepping into a different era, allowing me to savor a timeless moment. ⏳ The History and Appeal of Akafuku When I first tasted Akafuku, I was amazed by its delightful flavor. Established in 1854, Akafuku has maintained its traditional methods and recipes since its inception. The sweet red bean paste, known as "koshi-an," paired with the chewy rice cake, is simply divine. 🤤 I learned from the staff that Akafuku is made with carefully selected ingredients and crafted by skilled artisans, which explains its exceptional taste. 👨🍳🍡 The balance between the sweetness of the red bean paste and the texture of the rice cake was a true revelation. The Joy of Tasting Akafuku When the Akafuku arrived at my table, its beauty was immediately apparent. Taking a bite, I was greeted with the wonderful combination of chewy rice cake and sweet bean paste. Each mouthful was a moment of pure bliss, with the gentle sweetness lingering pleasantly. 😋 Pairing Akafuku with matcha was another delightful experience. The slight bitterness of the matcha beautifully complemented the sweetness of the Akafuku, creating a deeper and richer flavor profile. 🍵 This combination enhanced the overall enjoyment of the treat. Seasonal Limited-Edition Treats One of the attractions of visiting the Akafuku Main Store is the seasonal limited-edition items. At that time, I tried the “Akafuku Ice,” a refreshing choice for the hot season.

Missed this Japanese wagashi. It is a traditional confectionery shop. Most of the tourist queue for take away. But actually the queue to dine in is shorter. That is a good rest after a whole day visiting, with river view. The mochi with azuki (red bean) on top just a perfect combination. The red bean paste is so smooth and pair it with tea, again.. Unforgettable. Too bad I only found this at Ise or Osaka stations.. As this is freshly made, you have to consumed it within 2-3 days.. So enjoy it if you happen to go to Ise.. Update: Went back to Ise again because of this shop.. Never diasspoint me.. Enjoyed the tea with akafuka.. Always..

(Trip was made back then on 23 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Never knew that akafuku has such a long history dating back to 1707. It was one of the many tea houses catering to people who came to Ise Grand Shrine during their pilgrimage. The akafuku mochi is consists of a soft mochi center covered in a red bean paste. The unique shape is very symbolic, with the three ridges representing the course of the sacred river Isuzu, and the white mochi depicting the pebbles that lie on the riverbed. It is the most iconic and famous sweet and souvenir of Ise. Needless to say, we had to give it a try. So does it live up to the hype? Well for me, I appreciate the heritage and symbolism of it all, but it feels more like satisfying your soul rather than satisfying your appetite. I mean it’s nice and tasty, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Makes for a good gift nonetheless.

Just 300 yen and you can enjoy Akafuku’s snack with Japanese tea at the seating space. Tips for non-Japanese speakers: There are two lines: one for dine-in and one for take out. Get on the first one and order, then you’ll receive a number plate. You get to the seating space, taking off your shoes. The staff will bring your snack and tea, calling your number. It’s pretty local shop. Most likely the staffs don’t speak English (I’m a Japanese speaker so didn’t have a problem at all. I’m just guessing here tho). Try to remember your number in Japanese, and raise your hand when the staff calls it.

I was told this is what to try in Ise, but was underwhelmed. It’s Mochi covered in, albeit smooth and high quality, Anko red bean paste. For ¥230 they included a second tea and we shared one order. It was so much anko, I’m glad I only had to eat one. The tea water is made in this huge vat. It was cool. It’s a nice little break though. You sit on bamboo mats in the tea house while eating. If you don’t like red bean paste, definitely skip this and go over to Fukusuke for the Iseudon!!

We were on our way to Ise Grand Shrine and decided to make a stop. As usual, we were glad we did. This is very popular amongst locals and you will see outlets at Okage Yokocho Ancient Street as well. Only difference? It’s quiet here. The sweets were perfect and certainly not the sickly sweet sort you get from Harajuku. I give it 11/10. Also, it’s in a quiet town which we walked around a bit.
