Kamakura Rokuyata — Restaurant in Kamakura

Having lived in Kamakura for 6 years now, this is one of the few restaurants I look forward to returning to.

Simply put...delicious food, expertly prepared, served by a friendly professional staff in a cozy space...makes a meal at Kamakura Rokuyata an enjoyable experience...every time.

The 'Hamburg' is Japanese comfort food that is served in many restaurants and often made at home. But Kamakura Rokuyata's version (patties made of chicken, pork and Tofu) is a lighter, more healthy version than the typical beef and pork patty. This is especially true as the set meal includes miso soup, a generous salad and Tofu side dish. The entire "Healthier" meal is an ensemble of lovely flavors which can be further tuned with the many topping options. My favorite is the 'Garlic and Spicy Oil' variant. The chef is a true genius.

When we first arrived at the restaurant, there was no name list at the entrance and no staff came out, so we simply lined up. After waiting 90 minutes, we realized others were being seated ahead of us and only then understood that we were supposed to write our names down. We explained the situation and asked if we could be seated, but the response was simply that we had to start over and wait again—an unreasonable answer.

This felt extremely unfair to foreigners unfamiliar with Japan’s waiting system. In the end, we left after wasting our time, and based on the restaurant's attitude, I would never want to...

The perfect spot to complete a visit to Kamakura. This restaurant serves topical local dishes one must not miss (like the unique Kamakura burger or the shirasu-don) as they cannot easily be found elsewhere, and it's all masterfully cooked and served. The staff is super welcoming, warm, helpful and kind. They even assisted me with some Japanese (as I'm trying to learn), although English communication is no problem (and they even have an English menu).
