I do not usually write reviews! But please BEWARE as there are hygiene problems at this hotel and boy oh boy the customer service was worst than the hygiene of the hotel I must say. Our maiden trip to Kamakura was pleasant until the moment we came back to our room at Hotel Metropolitan Kamakura and to our surprise we found an adult cockroach crawling in the room. Never did we encounter hygiene/pest problems in a hotel in Japan and this is definitely our first! We acted quickly and had it exterminated with a slipper before it gets a chance to go on hiding or crawling elsewhere and flush it down the toilet. We immediately alerted the front desk. It was 10pm, had a long day and we don’t have the energy to start packing our belongings for a room change since we will be checking out the next day. Requested for a free breakfast or late check out as compensation. Hotel front desk Ms Yoshida rejected our request outright and said the hotel was full but to our surprise, the hotel still have rooms available the next day on its website as well as other third party booking websites. She further mentioned that we could proceed to leave a negative review about the hotel as well as our encounter on social media as she has gotten the hotel manager’s approval to inform us to go ahead for the negative review. So here we are! Writing a bad review at midnight! Tired, dissatisfied with the hotel’s service and management. Never again will we come back to this hotel and our dissatisfaction will continue to live on to any future recommendations for hotels in Kamakura to...
Read moreA true gem just outside the Tokyo frenzy — it delivers 5-star comfort at a very un-Tokyo price point.
From the moment we walked through its serene, modern entrance, we knew we’d made a good choice. The atmosphere is minimalist zen with just enough polish to make you forget you’re still technically in a major city. Think Muji-meets-Mandarin Oriental… if the Mandarin Oriental had a better deal.
Our room was spotless, stylish, and surprisingly spacious by Japanese standards. The bed? Let’s just say if clouds had lumbar support, this would be it. After a few weeks of hard futons and budget hotel beds, this one felt like being hugged by the ghost of a high-thread-count samurai.
The bathroom setup was pure Japanese hospitality: deep soaking tub, separate rain shower, bidet toilet that sings lullabies (okay, maybe not, but close). And the overall quiet of the hotel made it the perfect place to recharge after days filled with temples, tonkatsu, and tactical umbrella maneuvers.
The staff? Simply excellent. Friendly without being intrusive, and always ready to help — from restaurant recommendations to taxi wrangling. They even offered umbrellas when it started pouring. That’s not customer service — that’s customer telepathy.
We loved being able to explore Kamakura at a slower pace while still having access to Tokyo via a short train ride. It’s the perfect base if you want a breather from the big-city grind without sacrificing comfort.
Would I stay here again? In a heartbeat. Would I move in and pretend I’m on a silent retreat?...
