福寿司 — Restaurant in Kumamoto

Amazing local sushiya! Great food and superb service. For omakase you need to book in advance, so on the spot we ordered for each person a sashimi set and sushi set. Everything was delicious, items were unique eg conch, whelk, sardine… and the usual crowd fav like salmon, various white fishes, different cuts of tuna (the otoro was to die for), uni. We specified that we didn’t want horse (which is a specialty of Kumamoto) nor shirako (cod sperm which is in season).

The restaurant is run by an older couple and a younger chef. The younger chef was able to speak relatively good English and used Google translate to explain certain things. The owners were super friendly and gave us various recommendations for sightseeing and food, and even brought out these decorative fish streamers that are used for the golden week festivals to share their culture with us. Even the other patrons who seemed like regulars were friendly and wanted to find out more about our hometown.

Overall 10/10 experience and I’d highly recommend it!! Per pax we had a sashimi set, a sushi set, some add ons of our favourites of the night (eg uni and otoro), alcohol, and the bill was around ¥10,000 per pax. This was the most amazing experience I have had in a restaurant. I have been all over the world, but never treated this well and to Wich good food.

I found it on Google maps. The rating was the highest in town. I walked in and this couple greeted me. They didn't speak a word in English, I didn't speak Japanese. She finds an electronic translator... I manage to tell them I wanted a sample of everything.

Using that translator we talked for over an hour. I ate sushi I had never had, I ate one at a time as the sushi man prepared and watched me eat and waited for my reaction.

The fish was fresh. The beer was cold. They had a constant smile. What else...

This is a great place to taste real sushi just opposite to Miso tenjin bus and tram and bus stop. On the first floor you can seat at the counter and enjoy the authentic type if sushi eating where the master chef will take your order and will prepare the sushi in front of you and will serve. They have wider place on second floor to have a party. Their sushi is fresh and excellent. A typical dinner may cost 3000¥ or more with sushi...
