かしな食堂 — Restaurant in Kyoto

A classical 3-2-1. We liked the food but felt as if it’s no value for the money. It’s definitely one of the more expensive restaurants we ate in. Neither taste nor portion were a match to the price tag. Hospitality was somehow missing that day. Greeting us and showing us the table was a silent hand gesture. After some attempts of eye contact we could actually order. Thanks to our eyes and google translate this worked. No English menu (ok) and no help at all (well..). The food came one after the other which was completely fine with us. The sushi-like dish they serve is, well, interesting. It’s tasty, yes. I‘d love to find it in my lunch box on a hike, for the mix and rice, where taste is not too important but getting food is. But for this price, for dinner? No thanks. There is also a TV and the owners were busy watching that together with what looked like a friend. I am ok with that but not it I feel neglected as a customer. Cannot...

Only cash is accepted (though I don’t count that as a downside). You have to pay 100 yen for water. They didn’t provide napkins.Maybe u need to ask. While I was eating, a cockroach appeared in the restaurant — first, it ran past my feet, then later it climbed up the wall next to the table. Although they dealt with it quickly, I don’t understand why this place is rated so highly. For 900 yen, you get six fried chicken pieces, but the convenience store across the street offers three pieces for 300 yen. Maybe these are just a bit bigger? But how big different can fried chicken could be? Compared to chain restaurants, this place doesn’t have much of a competitive edge — maybe just a slightly...

Amazing food and good vegetarian options.

We were able to book a table at this very small restaurant (3 tables of 4 and a bar) through messaging them on Instagram. As 5 we had to squeeze in with a chair on the end of the table but it worked out in the end.

The food is delicious and fairly priced. One vegetarian and one with a peanut allergy on the table and everybody left happy and full.

Couldn't give 5 stars for Atmosphere only because we were not aware that smoking was allowed in the store. One of our group didn't enjoy that surprise but we realise it's more common in Japan than in Europe to...
