If you're not Japanese, I wouldn't recommend this place.
We stopped by this cafe on our way to Kiyomizudera. I'm not sure whether he was the owner, but there was one man working behind the bar. He frowned as soon as we entered, and remained silence even when we made our order. He simply pointed at a table to tell us to wait. I suppose it was because we were foreigners and couldn't speak Japanese well enough. He treated a Japanese woman who came in afterward with a different attitude, greeting her with his voice rather than a mere finger. It was an uncomfortable and disappointing experience, especially since we hadn't encountered such awkwardness in any other Japanese stores. We quickly finished our coffee and left.
Not only is the service uncomfortable, but also the space is so cramped that it can barely accommodate six or seven people. Besides the bar there is a set of table and chairs that are definitely small for an average-sized adult. I felt that the only positive aspect of this cafe is the ambiance created by the cassette softly muttering...
Read moreWe saw this cafe had a 4.5-star rating on Google and decided to give it a try. It’s a small corner spot in an alley. When we entered, a man frowned at us. My daughter went to sit in a corner, but he spoke to her in Japanese, directing her to another seat.
The menu was entirely in Japanese, but fortunately, my husband can read it. We ordered two drinks, two toasts, and a curry rice. Then the man informed us that everyone must order a drink, which was understandable. However, he didn’t greet us, smile, or talk to us the entire time we were there, making it quite awkward.
There were five of us, and we ended up ordering five drinks, two toasts, and one curry rice, which cost us 51,000 yen—a price we found quite expensive.
After leaving with a very unpleasant experience, I thought we might have been the only ones treated this way until I read other bad reviews from foreigners, which made me feel a...
Read moreBest toast we had in Japan! They were out of jam and so my daughter had plain butter toast. She was delighted with the flavor! I tried the lemon toast and it was a real treat. My husband had honey toast and my son went for the works: with ham, cheese and a fried egg on top. All of the toasts were prepared with the precision of an engineer and the delicacy of an artist. The siphon coffee was wonderful. I would absolutely recommend! However, between the four of us this service took an hour. Please visit this shop only if you have patience and respect for the service provided. Unfortunately we witnessed some very disrespectful and irritating travelers. Since we were also travelers this made us feel uncomfortable and have some real sympathy for the lovely woman who was...
