Suginoya — Restaurant in Miyazu

Udon Perfection, no exaggeration. Food 5-stars, location 5-stars, price 5-stars. Suginoya's udon is famous in Japan, especially their black chikuwa tempura udon set. To give an example of how popular it is: I went for lunch on a Wednesday in mid-February during the "state of emergency." I arrived at 12:50 and snagged the very last order of black chikuwa. Even on a weekday in February Suginoya sold out of their signature dish by 1 p.m. And it was incredible. Everything is locally made. The chef trained in the udon mecca of Japan and came back to Amanohashidate to pair his udon skills with the local black chikuwa (the chikuwa/mochi and udon set is a big deal in Japan). The tempura was among the best I've had, and came with two long slices of black chikuwa, two pieces of mochi tempura, and one piece of chicken tempura. The volume of food was almost too much for me, and the price was an unbelievably cheap 900 yen, especially considering that this udon is praised by udon connoisseurs and chefs across the country. I am someone who usually prefers soba to udon, but this udon was flawless. Love the simplicity and yet tasty udon. I’m a first time tourist and was seeking for food- love the concept of a soveneir shop linked with the small humble restaurant. Was warmly welcome by an elderly staff. He was friendly and smiling and told me wrote my name on a chart as I was on waitlist for a table. Randomly decided to try out this shop for lunch and it was our best decision of the day. Their udon noodles were chewy, soup was flavourful, portion was generous for its price, and tempura was cooked to perfection! Definitely the best udon I’ve had in all my trips to Japan 💯

Owners of the shop were friendly and did their best to communicate with us in English, which made us feel welcomed. Would definitely pay Suginoya a visit again the next time we’re back...
