We wanted to try the Kaiseki (multi-course dinner). Our server (the son of the father-son duo I believe) spoke much better English than my Japanese and guided us to the ‘ume course’. Courses vary depending on the fresh products in season - our courses were squid, sashimi with local salmon, seared mackerel and more, fried yellowfin, miso, pickles, rice and broiled fish. All were very good. The fried yellowfin was particularly outstanding. See photos for how lovely the food was, it tasted as wonderful as it looks. The only thing that could count against this place is the ambiance…the lighting is harsh but you can definitely see the food well. Service was efficient and warm and the food was excellent.

Favorite dinner we had on our short stay in Naoshima. We sat the counter and took in the whole room. Seems like an old shop which adds so much to the character and the two running the restaurant were super nice to us. The karaage was SO yummy, and my dad had the steak and raved about it. We also got sashimi which was all so tasty. Quiet inside, which also adds to the nice atmosphere. Definitely noticed a change when noisier tourists came in. Would recommend matching the tranquil vibe to be considerate to the owners and other patrons if you come into this restaurant.

I came here for dinner by myself and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I ordered the take course which included a variety of fish, including sashimi and sushi. I also had a beer and a yuzu sour (a light alcoholic drink containing shochu). To avoid disappointment, I arrived very soon after opening (a few minutes after 5pm). Other customers who also arrived early without a reservation were lucky to be seated. However, on my way out, there was a sign that the restaurant was fully booked. I paid 5800 yen (£31). Card payments accepted.

ABSOLUTELY THE PLACE TO GO! The foundation of good sushi is the fish. Ever heard of sushi restaurants, where you do not have to use soy souce, because it may spoil the taste of the fish? Well, this is one of the few places on this planet, where this fairytale becomes reality. Here you will get a local salmon which tastes almost sweet. Ever experienced Red Snapper with no taste or simply average? Not here! Go for the grilled one. Some say that a true Japanese restaurant must not have a English menu...not true at all! Our waiter spoke even Polish. And yes - you can pay with credit card. We have been to Tokio, Kioto, Osaka, London, Barcelona, etc., and there is no place like New Olympia.

P.S. This is not a cheap place for low budget insta trash. Not expesive either though.

You can sit on tatamin mats. There are two private rooms.

Thank you and whenever I will be back on this island, you will...

The museums are the best thing about Naoshima Island, but I find it very hard to find food that has reliable opening hours. Monday they are mostly closed. My husband and I walked for 3 hours straight looking for decent food (and that day wasn't even Monday, their holiday) until we stumble upon this Sushi-Sashimi place near the port. The food is fantastic, and the place seems to run only by father and son, but they did it seamlessly. After a long hour of not finding public transport and walking only to find all places are fully booked or closed, finding this restaurant in Naoshima is the best thing that happened to...
