The atmosphere was homey and inviting, but it was a little cluttered. I like that there's reading material for patrons and no real rush to boot people out after they're done with their coffee and snack. The mezzanine seating is a nice way to look out the front windows to the street traffic and to do some people watching.
The service was just all right here. Again, it was lunch time, but if a restaurant can't handle a lunch rush, then something about the service or method of service needs updating. A lot of service in Japan runs aground of get food out as soon as you can rather than get a table's order out together. Also, common sense to me suggests that if we both ordered salads, that we would get them at the same time. Sure didn't. I got mine ages before my partner did, and I hate eating when the other person doesn't have any food. I always feel like I'm being a little unfair because the standard for service is clearly different for Japan and America. There is no tip involved, so there's no real reason to hustle for anything except customer satisfaction. I guess it wasn't key the day we went. Our waters went empty unless we made a point of asking.
On the upside, the food was delicious and was at a good price point -- we got coffee, a main course -- I had an egg salad sandwich. The eggs had a sumptuous cheese finish to them which I friggin' loved. But again, having eaten similar sandwiches back home, I was expected heavy flavors, not really at all. I'm pretty sure I could have crammed at least another 1/2 a sandwich in if I really tried.
As you can see, it came with a delightful little pudding as well as a few pieces of fruit. The pudding just melted away as I ate it, and it wasn't heavy as I was expecting. It had the look of a flan, and I was tapping into my experience eating flan in America as a gauge for what to expect, way off. Light and just the tiniest hint of cinnamon in the light syrup on top.
My partner got a mountain veggie pilaf, and she said it was just okay. Nothing super special.
The coffees weren't over the moon special either, but as part of the 'small lunch', it was...
