Genuine Izakaya Diner "Uotami" Onomichi Station — Restaurant in Onomichi

The food here was very good, and we enjoyed each item we ordered. They use tablets that you order off of once you're seated . Our issue with this restaurant is the shady additional charges that mysteriously appeared on our bill. The bill showed each item we had ordered in English and it made sense, but then there was some extra wording in Japanese. We noticed our bill was a little over 1000 yen more than it should have been. We asked why this was, and were informed the restaurant charges a 500 yen "cover charge" per person, along with an approx. 100 yen per person charge if you didn't each order an appetizer. We had each ordered an appetizer, but they charged us the fee anyway. None of this information was posted out front, or as you enter (we checked everywhere as we left). But when questioned, they pulled out laminated sheets from somewhere stating these charges. Again, no indication about this is given until you go to pay. This is shady. If you need to charge more to operate, do so. But don't hide extra charges on our bill. I'm guessing most people (tourists) don't even notice. We won't eat there again, despite the food being good. Hopefully this gets to people so they can make an informed decision! We also won't be recommending this restaurant to friends...
