Tonkotsu ramen BIG — Restaurant in Sendai

I went to this place around the end of 2019 when I visited Sendai (I love this city 👍🏻, definitely will go here again after this COVID-19 problem), so things might have changed.

First of all, I really like the ramen the dish that I chose (half randomly) since I only know hiragana & katakana (and some kindergarten-level grammar 😅). So me & my wife chose the same dish and we loved it. And yes, we have tried some of the more popular (based on the lists that you can find on the Internet, that is) ramen restaurants around Sendai and Sapporo. I know that it's personal preference but, this establishment is among the top ramen we have ever tried.

For the owner, a clearer or a more visible banner might help (at least for non-Japanese tourist). We almost missed this place because the sign was just a small wood board on the side of the main road near the stairs. Then again, we found this place actually by accident after looking in Google Maps for nearby ramen restaurant. With a name like Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen BIG, you’d better hope they deliver on their big size. And they do. If you can find this tiny shop in a side alley in Sendai, Miyagi, they will serve up decently big “Yokohama Tonkotsu Ramen,” aka Ie-kei for you. I ordered the Special Topping Large Size for 1180¥ and requested normal for noodle hardness, oil, and flavor.

The chashu was quite thick, so you can softly pull it apart the meat, though it slightly more fatty than well-braised. The soup is quite good, with some flavor of pork and saltiness of soy sauce, but it isn’t quite “ie-kei,” as it lacks the richness of true Yokohama.
