As an avid seafood enthusiast, I was thrilled to visit Kashi-no-Ichi Market, also known as Shimizu Fish Market, during my recent trip to Shimizu, Japan. This bustling marketplace exceeded all my expectations, offering an immersive culinary experience and a glimpse into the region's rich maritime heritage.

A Symphony of Seafood Delights:

From the moment I stepped into the market, I was captivated by the vibrant energy and the tantalizing aroma of freshly caught seafood. The sheer abundance of fish, shellfish, and other marine delicacies was a feast for the eyes. Vendors proudly displayed their wares, eager to share their passion for the sea's bounty.

A Culinary Adventure Awaits:

My taste buds were in for a treat as I ventured into the market's culinary haven. The array of restaurants and eateries was truly impressive, each offering its unique take on seafood preparations. I savored the delicate flavors of sushi and sashimi, the smoky goodness of grilled fish, and the hearty comfort of local seafood stews.

Ichiba Hall: A Treasure Trove of Delights:

Ichiba Hall, a dedicated section of the market, proved to be a treasure trove of seafood products, souvenirs, and local specialties. I spent hours browsing through the stalls, mesmerized by the variety of dried goods, artisanal items, and of course, fresh seafood.

Maguro Hall: A Tuna Extravaganza:

No visit to Kashi-no-Ichi Market would be complete without indulging in the king of the sea at Maguro Hall. This section of the market is dedicated to tuna, offering a vast array of dishes prepared with expertise and passion. I sampled everything from sushi and sashimi to grilled and stewed tuna, each bite a testament to the versatility and flavor of this beloved seafood.

Tips for an Unforgettable Experience:

Plan Your Visit: The market is open from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, closed on Wednesdays. Arrive early for the best selection of fresh seafood. Embrace the Experience: Take your time to wander through the market, absorbing the lively atmosphere and engaging with the friendly vendors. Savor the Flavors: Indulge in the culinary delights offered by the market's restaurants. Try local specialties like shirasu (whitebait) and blackthroat seaperch. Shop for Souvenirs: Bring home a taste of Shimizu by purchasing fresh seafood, dried goods, and local handicrafts from Ichiba Hall.

Kashi-no-Ichi Market is more than just a place to buy seafood; it's an immersive cultural experience that celebrates the bounty of the sea and the culinary traditions of Shimizu. Whether you're a seasoned seafood lover or a curious newcomer, this market promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Japan's...

Dazzling fish market with unique quirks. Walk around with UNAGI on stick or dive into an all-you-can-eat MEGURO spot. Take home souvenir from the fish can vending machine. Multiple restaurants overlook the open water from the second floor in north building. Great for replenishing before heading on ferry to Shimizu park or renting bike (available within market) to take on bike path to sea park.

Unlike the previous reviewer who described place as "basic" After having frequented fish markets in all corners of the country, this is actually top choice, due to the immense functionality of the space and friendly openness...

Fantastic place selling fresh seafood in one building with a grill your own seafood bbq restaurant upstairs. You can try the eel on a stick, squid on a stick, or fresh raw oysters. You pick they shuck it right in front of you. Dont choose the big ones. Very nice people and was very clean. In the next building over is all restaurants serving... yep seafood. The set menus of sashimi n tuna collar were amazing. I tried 3 different restaurants there. All so cheap like $20 us...

The market itself is closed for renovation, but next to it has 2 buildings that offer a lot of kaizendon restaurants - we tried the one on the second level directly in front of the stairs and is really impressed with the food, especially the freshness and how thick each slice of the tuna sashimi is. First time trying the fried tuna and really enjoyed it - it has the texture of karaage but lighter and crisp batter with a hint of lemon and doesn’t feel greasy at all.
