READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING. This should be labeled as a hostel.
It’s a cafe in an old traditional Japanese house. There are two tatami rooms, kinda very old, separated by a “paper” wall (literally). So if somebody is staying in the other room you’re gonna listen their breath even, not to say conversations…
We had a family staying in the other room, and the male adult was snoring like there was no tomorrow. We couldn’t sleep all night which is no fun given we had to hike the next day. We were also consistently beaten by bugs and mosquitoes.
Bathrooms were ok although a bit dirty for Japanese standard.
I can’t really recommend this place for sleeping even if the owner was trying to be helpful and she makes nice cakes.

ICHIE is about a 10 minute walk from Kii-Tanabe Station. I found ICHIE through bookingdotcom. Stayed in a tatami room with the basic futon set-up (love it!) Provided the basics: towels, some toiletries, coffee/tea, and their wonderful, delicious chiffon cake. Puri-puri! The chiffon was wonderful, thank you, ICHIE! Also, the ladies their that greeted me were very welcoming, thank you! 😊
Ideal for the #solotraveler. Just needed a place to rest my head in Tanabe before I embark on the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage the following day. Happy with my...
Read moreWe had stayed two nights in Ichie (Tanabe). One before doing the hike of the Kumano Kodo and one after returning and each time it was wonderful. The first stay was in this Ichie and the second was in their second location. The patio here (in the first location) is a classic Japanese garden. The staff are extremely kind and helpful. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and clean. And most of all, the morning cakes they make are illegally delicious! Nonetheless, the laundry in the facilities is easy to use and smells great. They also let us leave our baggage at the guesthouse until we come back. :) Very recommended for those who plan to...
