My husband and I went to this cafe recently. (For context: he is Japanese and I am American.) The drinks were tasty and service was generally good, but we had a distressing experience there that I wanted to share. Both of us are taking online classes and we couldn't get home on time for class due to a train delay, so we came to this cafe instead. It's not ideal - we would prefer to attend class at home - but there wasn't much we could do since it was raining and there aren't a lot of cafes in this area, and having classes/online chats in cafes is nothing new to society these days. We bought drinks and went to a back corner of the cafe. We both had headphones on and were listening to our respective classes when I saw a staff member slip a handwritten note to my husband. My husband had been asked a question by the teacher in his class, and I assumed that he was speaking too loudly and the staff had asked him to be quiet, which is a very reasonable request. But I was wrong: the note said that he needed to stop using his laptop because patients from the nearby hospital often come to the cafe and his laptop was a danger to them because it could interfere with their pacemakers. (Electronic devices can interfere with pacemakers if held within six inches. Needless to say, my husband was not actively pressing his laptop against the chest of any other customers in the cafe...) Everyone around him, including me, was using laptops and cell phones, but he was singled out. When he confronted the staff and asked for an explanation, they doubled down on their claim that his laptop could kill another customer, but finally admitted that, in addition to his laptop being a mortal danger to other customers, his voice was actually too loud as well. The staff went on to say that they had previously had arguments with noisy customers who refused to believe that they were loud and so they had adopted the tactic of telling customers that their electronic devices could kill other customers in order to maintain quiet. Obviously, this attitude and way of treating customers is absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional in every way. There is no excuse to be singling out customers and manipulating them by lying about their electronic device possibly killing another customer rather than being truthful about the issue at hand. If my husband was being too loud, then the staff were well within their rights to tell him to be quiet, not make up lies. If customers are regularly being noisy and causing trouble, then the staff need to deal with the situation appropriately without lying and making up completely unscientific, bogus stories. 地元のお年寄りの社交場になっていて、カフェというかは喫茶店という雰囲気。ビジネス街のドトールでは味わえない空気感が残っているので、ざわめきが気にならない人なら居心地は悪くないと思う。
