Finally decided to give MOS burger a try. It was breakfast (at noon) after a late night at the izakaya. I had a slight headache and I was fatigued. Best time for fast food.
The place was packed, but the line moved quickly, and I was able to use the touchscreen kiosk, which meant I had a clear English language menu. Phew! I ordered the classic Mos burger and the Tobikiri cheese burger. Set-meal, with fries and a melon soda.
While the menu and the ordering experience are very similar to a US fast food chain, the entire place is much more pleasant. It's clean, it's calm, and nobody seems harried. Also, it's not targeted towards take out, they carry the food to your table. It's not all about food in a brown bag that absorbs the grease. After you order, you take a number and they'll come find you, handing you your food in a real whicker basket on a plastic tray.
The Classic MOS burger has a special sauce. It's more subtle than I was expecting. Like a marinara. There's also a big fat slice of tomato, a ton of diced sweet onions (raw), and mustard on the bottom. The whole thing tastes almost like a pizza burger, with more nuanced, or reserved, flavor than Americans would expect after years of bold, sugar-forward, vinegary ketchup on MSG burgers. It's a beef/pork blend that has a slightly bouncy texture.
The Tobikiri burger says that it is made from 100% beef and topped with Hakkaido cheese. It also had a smoky barbecue sauce. The melted Hakkaido cheese was almost like whiz, but with a bit more gouda-like flavor complexity. The outsides of the patty were slightly crisp, so you get a hint of the griddled flavor experience, but unfortunately, none of the juicy, greasy beef tallow. The patty consistency is more like what you'd expect on a meatball--more finely ground and less sinewy than most American burgers.
The fries were mushy. I did what they suggest on the website, dipping them in the fallen MOS burger sauce, with all those diced onions. That greatly improved them, but it was hard to reach my hand into the paper wrapper without getting filthy. They were ultimately very disappointing fries.
Overall, MOS burger tastes a lot less like chemicals and flavoring-agents than US fast food, but it doesn't taste healthy or high-quality. And it's still just as mediocre when compared with real Japanese restaurants. There's so much good cheap food available in Tokyo, I'm not sure why anyone...
Read moreThis Mos Burger was phenomenal. The store we wanted to go to was closed so we figured we’d pop in and try a Japanese fast food spot.
Food - food was delicious. The fries were a bit undercooked and they only had Pepsi not Coke, but the burgers were extremely tasty and honestly I felt like they were prepared with love and care. First time the food legit looked like the promo photo.
Service - service was impeccable. There were three lovely employees, two ladies and a younger gentlemen and they were all incredibly polite, caring, and helpful. I felt like I was at their home.
Atmosphere - atmosphere was very calming with some super chill music and honestly I kinda felt like I wanted to take a nap. The decor was lovely and the entire store was spotless.
For fast food, I have zero complaints. 4.5/5, I...
