Unique experience but mysterious charges on the bill... I was here in november 2023 - a japanese friend took me...it's a unique place with good food and very performative service...first of all it's hard to find...there is a tiny sign outside, then you have to go down an alley and bend over/duck low to get in through the half-door (this kind of makes it feel like you have stumbled upon a secret den and adds to the vibe as you enter). It looks like the kind of place that only locals would know...but then i realised my friend was one of the few japanese customers there...as mentioned the service is very performative...there's lots of shouting by the staff - for example your drinks order to the bar - and it creates a really lively atmosphere. people share tables so it's more sociable than any of the chain izakayas. the food was good, there was a good range and it was well prepared, staff are quite proactive in soliciting orders which keeps the booze flowing. they have a mochi making session where they offer customers the chance to come up and literally hammer the dough, while a staff member kneads as the hammer is raised... it's card payment only (or e-payments i think, but i paid with cc) and when presented with the bill it was around Y12000 but after they took the card the bill ended up being around Y14000. 14k is fine for the amount we ate/drank and for the experience, but that should be what the bill is, instead of sneaking it on... overall it was probably worth doing but probably wouldn't go...
Read moreUnbelievable experience, one of the best meals and favorite memories my gf and I had in Japan. The entrance through a small secret door was fun, the team was super friendly and helpful, ordering was easy via phone in English, and the quality of the food was superb. The two of us had the charcoal seared bonito, grilled mackerel, sashimi, toro maki, grilled eggplant, grilled asparagus, and onigiri. All were fresh and delicious, came with great condiments such as fresh grated ginger, yuzu pepper pickles, sweet soy sauce, and plum sauce. Watching the chef searing the charcoal on a huge fork over an open flame and grilling other robatayaki made for a memorable night in Tokyo. The team even gifted us some packaged miso soup on the way out, a sweet gesture on top of an already phenomenal experience. I can't recommend this gem more highly, and I look forward to coming back. Make sure to make a reservation via...

The highlight of the meal was the tuna seared with charcoal. The smoky flavor was like no charcoal fish I’ve ever eaten! a simple dish done exceptionally well. Each bite was a testament to the quality and craftsmanship behind the preparation. We also recommend the grilled mackerel, which was expertly cooked and bursting with flavor.
Overall, Nakame no Teppen Honten is a 10/10 experience that combines exceptional food, energetic service, and a unique ambiance. If you're in the area, this hidden gem is a must-visit! You need to pre book so make sure you book so you...
