First and foremost, they offer a free sweet if we write a review (as of June 24 2024). And I was explicitly asked by chef Sanjay to write a review and mention his name.
With that aside, here's everything I ordered and my rating out of 5 for each. Imagine 5 equalling the tastiest version, which I've likely had in Delhi/Mathura, or somewhere else in India.
aloo tikki (3.5 stars) Was crispy, and okay in taste. Not great not bad
kaala chana chaat (4.3 stars) Was great! Can recommend. Simple (not oily, no crazy spices) and tasty!
shahi samosa (2.8 stars) Wasn't warm and crispy enough. Stuffing was okay in taste
rawa dosa (4 stars) Crispy and tasty! Both the chutneys and sambhar tasted good
masala chaas (3.8 stars) Was okay. Not great, not bad either
mango milk shake (3.9 stars) Tasty, but the quantity was less
paani puri (2.5 stars) The paani was basically liquid green chutney
dhokla (4.2 stars) Served with tasty green chutney. Tasted exactly as dhokla should, probably the second best item after kala chana chaat. But it was served warm! I've always had it cold or at room temperature. Tasty nonetheless! Gotta admit, haven't had much dhokla before, so can't critique much
aloo paratha (3.8 stars) If you're not expecting much, it's good. But otherwise the stuffing was probably the stuffing of masala dosa. Served with dahi and achaar
Desserts
gajar halwa (3.5 stars) Not great, not horrible either
milk cake (4.3 stars) Served warm, tasted great. Can recommend. Tho I think I'm probably overrating it
rabri (2.2 stars) Whatever was served wasn't horrible per se tbh. But I can't call it rubri
The hospitality of chef Sanjay was outstanding! We spoke about the history of the restaurant. He offered the free sweets for the review as he had promised. Of course I'm editing this review at home later for the details.
Comparing with Tokyo Mithaiwala, I'd say Mithaiwala somehow has better vibe (can't believe their vibe is winning) and has a slight edge on the taste as well. But both the places offer this rare street menu, which should be appreciated.
If I visit Oh Bhaiya again, it'd be for the hospitality of Sanjay, and the rarity of the menu (+ my cravings of course), but definitely not for the taste.
Visit once. Decide for...
Read moreI was starting to feel guilty on the long bus ride from the Diamond and Flower Ferris Wheel that I had dragged my boyfriend all the way to this restaurant for some Indian food we could get back home. Friends - I was wrong. I have always wanted to try real chaats since my friends in grad school used to talk about how much they missed them, and little else, from the cuisine we could find easily in the United States.
I couldn't tell you now what we ordered. Stick to those items with the little chefs hatnext to them, and you cannot go wrong. I laughed when I tried the first dish. I had never had such a collection of flavors and textures, and it was incredibly delightful but also amazing. Like hands down some of the most memorable food of my life. My boyfriend was a serious fan of the gyoza in chutney and thought it was a top 2 for him of dishes in Japan.
This restaurant had a couple really fun, creative fusion dishes that you should absolutely try. I wish we had larger stomachs. We had gone for snacks in late afternoon, but they do serve a really cool dinner menu I am tempted to fly back for. I am not saying what we spent here because honestly, we just ordered every item on the chaats pages that was unfamiliar to me, and it was a lot and we ate it all even though we said we couldn't possibly when we ordered it. This is reasonably priced food but not cheap food.
I really loved the vibes of this place. It was extremely bright and fun. The place was packed with friends lingering over some snacks which honestly just warmed my heart. Seems like a great cafe to meet up with someone.
If you are lucky enough to live near here, you probably already know how great it is, but if you're visiting Tokyo and are a little sick of chicken katsu, come try this. Seriously. It's an incredible delight. It's also within very reasonable walking distance from the Metro or subway.
Sells live curry leaf plants, FYI, if you need. They...
Read moreI called them up almost half an hour ago (at 7:35). After looking at the restaurant timings that it closes at 10 pm, I requested them to allow me and my fellow passengers (travelling back from Kawaguchiko) to eat at their restaurant if we reach by 9:30-9:35 (as per maps) if only google maps showed the same time and not later than this. I was told by 2 or 3 staff members that last order was at 9:30 and after that the staff cleans up and closes the restaurant. I don’t understand that why do they say they close at 10 pm. I informed them that I’m traveling with 2 toddlers and an old woman (my mother). She can’t eat at any other restaurant that also serves non veg owing to her religious inclination. But as usual it is a waste of time to expect any empathy because it is more important for the staff to cut short their work and leave asa customers leave. I don’t understand that why I was refused to place an order before 9:30 pm (respecting their last order timings) and keep the food prepared so that we can come and eat and leave by 10pm. We had to travel another 1 hour to reach home but my request was not only not entertained but the staff, in the end, pretended they can’t hear me anymore and I was forced to disconnect the phone. Oh Bhaiya was not even my first choice. The food is usually average. If Tokyo Mithaiwala opened with the same timings as Oh Bhaiya, I wouldn’t have even opted to call Oh Bhaiya to make my request. At least at Tokyo Mithaiwala, I have personally always felt respected and helped when needed. Never going back again!!! Pathetic staff!
BTW looks like AMBIKA has become bigger than its customers. In fact, I have stopped ordering from them because I was sent expired atta with bugs. Now the...
