I've lived in Japan over 26 years. I'm an old, stress on old, Santa Cruz, California beach volleyball bum. I was so spoiled. Great Mexican was a short walk from the courts.
When I first arrived in Japan, Mexican restaurants existed, but not many, and pretty much Japanese style. Nowadays, it's hard to keep up, with taco stands popping up all over.
I live in Hayama, on the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa. Dear Wife and I just had dinner at an obscure, at least to us, Mexican restaurant. It's in Yokosuka, not really too near a train station, but not so far, either. We drove and found paid parking nearby.
It's called Sho's Food Stand, but it seems like a small bar inside, catering to locals. It does not open until 5:00 PM and closes at 9:00 PM, but it appears on Thursday to close at 7:30 PM-short hours! It appears to close Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
I'm writing about this place because the food, everything, was so, so tasty! Hey, I've been to scores of places where the food looks stunning, but ends up merely mediocre. You know the feeling...
The menu is rather limited, but what they do, they do well. We started with nachos. I am normally not a nacho man, but, wow, each bite was a bite from heaven. Crisp chips topped with an amazing cheese sauce.
Dear Wife and I split two tacos and a plump, crisp chicken chimichanga. Flavors exploded with each bite, once again.
They do not have a phone and seating is limited. Dear Wife contacted the owner on Instagram and made a reservation. I recommend doing so. It would be tragic to walk all the way, only to be...
Read moreI have never posted a review so fast in my life, but visiting here was worth the wait! I was finally able to catch this place right as it opened for dinner. (Usually when I pass by it looks pretty busy.) Had to spin the block a few times looking for open parking. Thank you to the owner for letting me place my take-out order, and come back once I secured a space. I ordered one of each taco. Food was made to order, and I never mind waiting for a fresh meal. Made it home, gave it a taste and IMMEDIATELY YES! YES! YES! YES! It's hard to come by these flavors in Yokosuka but I'm glad to have found it! Will be back soon, but next time I will definitely take the bus. Plus, that give me an excuse to try the delicious looking drinks!...
Read moreI really don't want to tell you how good this place is...but I guess I will 😉 It's a small place but that makes it even more comfortable. First, the food is amazing, delicious taste and huge portions. Pork and chicken chimichangas hit perfectly! Weekly menus change and seem to offer a lot of varieties. Lots of hot sauces to choose from. Didn't drink but my friends said the IPAs were good. Owner has a great personality (ask to see the photo of him in The Source magazine!) Interesting stories and speaks English. Did I mention that the music selection is FIRE 🔥 Random, but I love the color and interior design selection. Paid parking is nearby for a decent price. About a 10 min walk from the station. Highly recommend! I'll be...
