Small, local museums are so often real gems - and this place is no exception. The history of Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula, on which it is located is laid out, in great detail, from the area's geological formation, and through its subsequent transitions, to the arrival of flora and fauna, and into human history from prehistoric, right up to modern times. Among the myriad of notable exhibits, far too many to name, among my favourites are the natural history exhibits, such as the skeleton of Naumann's elephant - the first of it's kind ever found, just down the hill from the museum; the extensive reconstructions of ancient and medieval dwellings and workplaces, from the feudal warrior lords of Miura to the humblest peasants and fisherfolk; and of course the bust of William Adams, the actually historical but nevertheless also legendary English samurai. I'm doing my third YouTube series on the history of the area, so it's great that photography is allowed in the museum, that the staff are patient and helpful, and that it's free, so I can pop in and continue my research and expand my knowledge on a regular basis. Set in a handsome, well-maintained little park, full of interesting, metal-cast statues, and with a restored historic coastal defence battery, and impressive hilltop views over Tokyo Bay, it's a lesser-known and even lesser visited Yokosuka attraction that sooner or later will start to attract far larger numbers of visitors than it...
