It's my second ever time going to the Lamplighter, the first time was about 15 years ago, and the second time was yesterday, and I remember why I never went to the place in the last 15 years.
As soon as you walk in, it's a hostile atmosphere, with everyone looking at you. It's as if you've walked into an EDF pub, wearing an EU flag... I soon gathered this is a working man's pub, the average age of the customer was about 50, all men.
I went on a Tuesday evening, and you could hardly move about due to the small size of the pub, and amount of people. Imagine what the place would be like when it's actually busy on a Friday night... You would not be able to move, or get a seat.
There were 3 female barstaff on that night, so it was fast and easy to get a drink, but I'm fairly certain these girls were hired for their looks, rather than their talents. Have young attractive girls behind the bar, and you will attract the pervy 50+ year old men. They totally seemed disinterested in the job, and more interested in just speaking to each other in their own language (which sounded like Latvian due to their accents). In a private atmosphere, they can speak their own language, or any language, or if a staff member is training a new member of staff, it's fine to speak the same language as the person you are training (makes it easier to train them), but when you're on duty, in public, you need to speak the local language, which is ENGLISH.
Despite being a Randall's owned pub, they don't accept Randall's card. I guess it's not accepted at the tenanted pubs.
If you enjoy a very claustrophobic bar, with young pretty Eastern European girls serving you, and love your sport, this is a pretty good bar. Otherwise, go to Chambers, or even Royal Yacht for a more...
Read moreNot only was this the best pub we visited during our trip to Jersey, but it is one of the best I've ever been to anywhere. Delightfully decorated with very comfy seating and spacious too.
An absolutely top-notch range of ales and ciders on handpull alone would make it worth the visit. However, the friendly welcome from locals and staff alike kicked things up several notches. Great pork pies added to the experience. It was so good we went out of our way the next day to go back again. We weren't disappointed.
I did have to smile when I saw Banks's Mild on handpull; the brewery is a (long) stone's throw from us, yet I've hardly seen it served this way in many a year. Well done The Lamplighter and all who...
Read moreI'm quite fond of a pint. Partial, some might say. But in all my borne days, I've never had the bar staff come out and gently suggest, when I'm parked in a corner, that my half-drunk pint is a bit cloudy and past its best, and then give me a free full pint of something else that they recommend. And they were right. I'm just in Jersey with work, just wanting a couple of bevs after a long day. This place is Next Level. Regulars greeted with a nod and a smile. Clean and comfy, buzzing even on a Tuesday. Banging pork pies. Get a spoon for the piccalilli! Don't get me started on the whisky selection. That wouldn't end well... But would be fun while it lasted. I need to come here for a...
