From the moment I was greeted by a smiling face and shown to my table, I could tell I was about to have a memorable experience.

I travel a lot for work, I’m fortunate enough to have tried all manors of cuisine, from quick, traditional street food to Michelin star restaurants. But few have left me as pleasantly surprised as The Square.

The starter, crab arancini, was delightful, but when paired with the rich tomato bed of salsa, the dish came alive. Next up, lamb chop with Jersey royals and seasonal vegetables. The lamb was so perfectly cooked I’d have happily eaten it five times over. Finally, desert. Well, sort of, I opted for a cheese plate, which consisted of cheddar, goats cheese and stilton. I’m not keen on blue cheese, so I asked for it without. To my surprise, they replaced it with some French brie, which just so happens to be my favourite. Served with plenty of rye crackers, grapes, honey dip and some delicious candied walnuts, this concluded a most excellent meal.

Never did I expect one of the best dining experiences of recent memory to come from a quick Google search after a busy days work, but I couldn’t be further from disappointed.

Excellent food, friendly staff and a calm yet vibrant atmosphere, I could not recommend this establishment any more excitedly and whole heartedly.

10/10, I look forward to coming...

It’s very sad we were looking forward to eating at this place but such horrible customer service!!!

I’m writing this on behalf of my friend. We ordered steak worth about 22 pounds. We asked it to be medium well. It came out well done. My friend commented to the staff that it was well done and too hard. Staff went back a few minutes later that it was medium well. No apologies and she sounded so angry. My friend was really hungry and looking forward to eating here. When we went to the counter, still no apologies but there’s a service charge, my friend said she’s not happy to pay it. They removed it from our bill. We went there around 4 the pot bellied waiter was very rude to us from the beginning. Then the waitress who told us it was not well done, it was medium well was rude too. The female staff at the cashier was very nice but it would have been great if she apologized instead of insisting it was medium well and not well done.

Lessons: a simple apology of your restaurant’s mistake is enough, don’t insist that you are right when you’re wrong, the customer is always right, in your restaurant it’s the customer is wrong

Train your staff with customer service, that pot bellied male waiter was horrendous, my friend asked for less ice and he told her to...

Food was great and, when we actually got served, the staff were nice but the restaurant wasn’t busy (we were first ones in for lunchtime!) when offered a dessert menu we politely declined and continued with our drinks, however, we had hoped to have another drink before leaving but none of the staff came to check on us, when I peered round the corner to see how busy the place was I saw one staff member on their phone and another two having a chat.

Ultimately, we decided to go elsewhere for another drink as the beer I had tasted a bit off which, I believe, was a result of the pipes not being cleaned. But I have experienced this in many other establishments so understand that it may have just been in between cleans, which I would have informed the staff if they’d come to take another drink order from us.

Despite my minor gripes I would return again as really did like the food and atmosphere, just had to say something as feedback is...

Even good locale's have mishaps.. the difference is the good places know how to resolve issues to the customer's satisfaction. Working in catering & hospitality 20 years, I know the odd customer can try to exploit things but generally people have a genuine gripe. The team at the square dealt with my particular foible in superb manner and the birthday dinner was just a special as it was intended to be. More generally the food is tasty with a large and tempting menu, with GF options and vegan & veggie dishes as well. Good for meat and fish lovers too with a Josper grill in the kitchen. I found my steak to be tasty and well cooked to my liking. I can't comment on the wine list this time, but well worth a visit. It's location is prime St Helier and can't be bettered. I think they cater to larger groups well and have an outside area which is pleasant for when the sun hits this particular rock in the sea.

the ambience is good but the food was not what i had expected. the special menu pan fried trout was not what i had expected, the broth of crab bisque that came with it just tasted like sea water, i expected seafood sweetness in it. the trout was not well seasoned. the potato was okay. We ordered the oyster to try, probably we are not a fan but it was fresh. i was expecting wasabi but the sauce is just soy sauce with honey. as for the rib eye steak, it was pretty bad, it was dry. we ordered medium rare, but most of the part was medium to medium well. the sides were okay, shout out to the oyster mushrooms, i was pretty well cooked. I ordered the wrong dessert, the rice pudding was very filling. It doesn't taste like dessert. more like a proper nice meal. for service wise, it doesn't feel welcome. probably the waitresses were having a bad day.
