Old Hong Kong — Restaurant in Riga

The food is great, huge portions. We visited as a party of four people and we ate a lot and everything was really tasty 😋 We even took some leftovers home for next day. As a starter we had pig ear galert. Wasn't really chewy what I was expecting, but was really nice texture and tasted really nice with the sauce. Next we had dumplings, two types - sea food and veal, both had really distinctive tastes and I would eat more of them. I hade duck (can't remember the sauce) but was on the more expensive side, but this dish is suited more fore 4 persons than 1. As a dessert we had both fried ice cream and fried apples covered in melted sugar. The sprinkles on ice cream were a bit more disturbing there than helping, but overall couldn't stop eating them 😆 Interior is really fancy and neat. Restaurant with some good selection of Chinese dishes. Easy and unpretentious. Moderately priced it has good value for money. Dishes are simple, nothing extraordinary.

That's not a fine dining place, but more of a family restaurant to visit with kids.

Beef in chili oil is good and I had it all for myself, despite the warning of the waitress that it's big and usually for two or even three people. It was enough for me. Not spicy hot at all to my palate. I would expect it to be more spicy.

Dumplings with pork and cabbage were very good. Sweet pork dish was also tasty.

Drinks menu is very short and simple. I was disappointed with tea. Tieguanyin oolong tea was of a very poor quality and was brewed with hot boiling water. I prefer this half-fermented tea to be more gentle. And please increase the quality of your teas. Those are close to unacceptable at the moment, thus four stars.

TIP: brace yourselves and try the "Peanuts with vinegar" item; it's much better than it sounds. Or, if you're into spicy stuff (and are at least 4 people), inquire the waiter for the delicious hot pot, it's not on the menu but also available if you ask :) In my view, hands down the best Chinese place in Riga right now. Note the "Chinese" part - the 5 stars in this case doesn't mean it's one of the best restaurants overall, but in its niche it's a killer. Firstly, the food tastes just like in continental China (used to live in the Middle Kingdom for a couple of months so this is not pure speculation). Secondly, our Chinese language teacher has confirmed that it's the best she's tried in Riga so far. Overall, don't expect fancy cutlery, sophisticated service, or flawless decors: this is not the point of the place (or of China, I suppose) - but if you enjoy trying new things or just up for some exotic spicy concoctions, Old Hong...
