Good news, no more lengthy forms to fill up. Bad news, service is still sub-par compared to other cafes.
The staff in general are blur. Cashier seemed to be in a daze as she was constantly looking outside while we were placing our order. It got to the point where we turned back multiple times to see what she's staring at. Maybe we had imaginary company that we weren't aware of.
Then comes the weird decision the cafe management has made. The drinks are brewed outside in the caravan and in poor weather conditions, the staff has brave the weather and go out to grab the drinks. So happens that it was pouring and one of the staff had to go out in the rain with an umbrella. No one gave her a hand.
This would've been understandable if everyone was busy, but nope the whole bunch (counted 6 or 7 of them) were just piled up behind the counter. Evidently, they were more interested in their conversation than cafe operations. Having another person accompany her or even hold the door for her would have made sense as she wouldn't have to fumble with the umbrella / door while juggling the drink. Suffice to say I wasn't surprised when the drink spilled. An entirely avoidable situation if the rest of the staff weren't too busy chatting amongst themselves and just "hodor".
As for the SOP, I'm not sure if the team went from strict SOP to none as we spotted a customer ordering at the counter without a mask, and none of the staff reminded them to have their mask on.
I don't find a compelling reason to return for a third time. Two chances are more than enough. My verdict? There's many cafes in Penang where you can spend your money on. Just skip this one.
Literally the worst SOP for reservations.
You have to fill up a lengthy form and get the vaccination screenshots of every person who will be dining in just to place a booking. Mind you, the reservation is not confirmed until late evening. So you'll be left wondering if the whole paperwork you've done would amount to anything.
Also, there's a one hour dine-in time, which I was only informed upon showing up for the reservation. Lucky for us, there weren't new customers coming in so we got to stay for an additional hour.
Food was okay, drinks were decent but gimmicky. Pricing is on the expensive side. They're called CAN cause they literally can the drinks before serving. Makes for a nice picture, but that's bout it.
Nice picturesque spot at the Ghee Hiang garden, though parking will be...

☕Championing the café scenes in Penang at the moment is 'Project Can'. Founded by 4 young entrepreneurs, this Australian coffee concept café is SO fully booked that just getting a booking there can be a challenge, even on a WEEKDAY! My colleagues and I had to book a table 1 entire day in advance; we went without booking initially and there already was a queue.
🍵Adele from Adele Academy HAD to bring me here. With very much pride, she says that she's been visiting this café almost daily. 'I want to support also because it's the first amazing café that's survived and thrived near my home!', she exclaims.
🍬Project CAN is amazingly picturesque; twice have I been here, and twice have I seen patrons dressing up JUST for the photography at this place. With modern minimalistic design, and a menu that's set to please the eye, it's no wonder that this café is doing really well.
🍹Drinks are literally served in a CAN. When I asked which drink was something they'd be proud to serve, they couldn't answer it initially; they're proud of every single handcrafted drink served here. Beautifully displayed, the cans make for quite an experience.
🍝The food is GREAT. I had an amazing 'Houz Sauce Flame Chicken', while Adele had their signature 'Bird Nest'. It is evident that every single dish served here is served with great pride and skill. If it's second best, it's not going to be in their menu. Of course, the term 'best' is subjective; but they definitely serve only the best according to their capabilities.
🌄I recommend booking in advance if you plan to dine here, or not be prepared to wait for an hour, under shady trees and a lovely backdrop of...
Read moreThis cafe is for couple, good to come here take photo, checked-in but not advisable to dine in, food below average, and worse it is not for family, they are not flexible, not willing to join tables even though the space is sizeable for joint tables while still maintaining the SOP. The staff is not well trained, not really friendly. Often served the food to wrong table. We ordered soup, salad and main course. To my disappointment, they served the main course and salad first, then only soup, and it is warm soup, not hot enough for a good mushroom and onion soup, again another disappointment. The spaghetti is a total failure, bad. The Norway Ponzu Salmon is a disaster, it taste like the cheap Salmon bought from Tesco, from the texture you know it is frozen for months. The hot charcoal latte is warm, not hot, hence another disappointed. The way they serves the food is also unacceptable, please use trays instead. The soup served with sourdough bread placed on top of the bowl, how to carry to table without holding the bread bare hand? It's not hygienic, the If you asked me, the only food that is above average is the salad, nothing else worth mention. This is extremely poor food quality cafe. I gave 2 stars for the environment & decor,...
