Soon Lai Seafood 順來本地海鮮 — Restaurant in George Town

Decided to have dinner here with family to try their dishes. There’s indoor tables (with air-cond) and outdoor tables (with fans) to choose from. Indoor table were limited as most of the tables were huge in size. The smallest they have it seems to be in 4 feet diameter. As we come in with total of 5 pax only we had no choice but to sit in of those huge table. A huge round table with diameter of 7 feet easily usually need to have lazy Susan so we can share the dishes conveniently but to my horror all tables are the same. Basically we need to stand up to reach for heavy dishes or pass around the dishes as we dine 🥹. Here’s what we tried tonight:

Plum-Infused Chicken Cubes 梅香鸡丁 Rm 24 ⭐️⭐️ This dish recommended by the waiter aunty. The plum sauce were great however the portion given were too small! It’s about 1 big chicken thigh that cut into miserable 1-2cm cube size. 🥺 Not only the chicken meat texture feels like rubber the sauce didn’t even infused into the chicken. Totally not worth Rm 24 dish.

Stir Fry Sambal Kangkung 马来风光 Rm 14 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After we finished other dishes we waited for 10mins for this last dish to come. Good portion, Sambal quite fragrant, kangkung vege didn’t overcook and quite crunchy too.

Stir Fry Sweet Potato Leaves 番薯叶清炒 Rm 14 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good portion, vege well seasoned and didn’t overcooked.

Sizzling Tofu 铁板豆腐 Rm 18 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Besides little bit of minced onion with minced chicken there’s no vege like minced carrot. Tofu portion also skimpy like half block tofu given only. The sauce was okay. Definitely not worth the price.

Kam Heong Cuttlefish 甘香鱿鱼 Rm 18 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This dish recommended by the waiter aunty. The cuttlefish fillet cut too thick and big and irregular in size. The sauce was okay. Portion decent.

The white rice is served in big bowl with ladle so everyone can self service take how much they want to eat. If you’re a family of small eater better to reduce 1 pax portion as we don’t have idea why by default they gave us 5 Big size portions rice for 5 pax of us. So do tell them you want small size and reduce 1 pax amount first. They have limited drink choices however their Barley drink that they made themselves were really nice! Overall we didn’t really enjoy our meal here maybe mainly because we didn’t try their signature seafood dishes as we didn’t like their fish selection mostly Red Snapper. Very terrible restaurant that we have ever went. Lady is so rude and she offered a very cheap fish and said that its going to be delicious. We didn want that fish as it does not look fresh and we asked for other fish, and they said only fish meat available. We agreed and finally she gave us the same cheap and old fish to us. It taste so horrible and when I asked what fish is that, and she said its shark. I asked how come its not fresh and so flaccid. And she can reply me back in a rude manner saying that "we provide you extra and its FOC, that part is the liver part". It stinks and yes, i cant even swallow it. Food portion so small, we ordered salted fish prawn and they gave exactly 4 prawns. We asked tomyam for a smaller portion for one person to eat, and she said cannot in rude manner. The fried egg was half cooked and the squid fry is the worst. It was not cooked at all, just some crispy layers on top of it. When i complained, she just ate in front of us and just pretend like nothing. Worst come to worst, my kids came back home and vomitted the food as all the dishes was not fresh and halfly cooked. Myself and husband got diarrhoea. Never go to this restaurant. Very bad service and price is not reasonable at all. You will regret...

Really very dissatisfied and disappointed with the service they provided on 2nd day of Chinese New Year (Chor 2). I called to book a table of six for dinner, they lady told me that I will get a table outside not inside air-con, and it’s fine with me. Then she demanded I ordered dishes in advance and paid rm100, I also did that prior going. When we arrived at 6pm, she told us we are sitting at a table closest to the main entrance, we are NOT allowed to change table or not even allow to change the broken plastic cover of that table. After some disputes, they finally changed the broken plastic cover for us, here comes another drama. RM68 for a YEE sang where we only see a few strings of octopus which it’s too hard to notice in the pictures and a few strands of colorful crackers! This is way too overpriced, seriously Soon Lai, we have been your loyal customer for years and this is going to be the last time visiting your restaurant. We all understand eating out will be more expensive during CNY but Soon Lai, you are way too much! Too small portions for other dishes and total terrible...
