Exceptional char koay teow: it comes in a clump shoved to one side of a plate. Pillowy soft koay teow. Silky streaks of egg. And above all, incredible taste.
I come here every time I visit Penang. I would come here every morning if I could. But then I'd end up in the hospital. So better not lah.
Some people might diss this CKT stall for these reasons:
No koo chai or chives No see ham or cockles No lap cheong or Chinese sausage
Some people want even bigger prawns. Or more prawns.
If you want those things, go somewhere else lah. Join the rest of the tourists and their Michelin guides.
Don't come here. There are more than enough people here waiting in the morning. We don't need you griping about how my favourite CKT stall doesn't have enough liao.
But if you want the best tasting CKT and you are here to eat the noodles, then you have come to the right place.
I always order mine large. Extra chilli. The guy will arrange a rubber band on a chopstick to indicate my special order. Usually I have to wait for 20 plates before I get my plate.
While waiting, you can order Chee Cheong fan or roti canai next door. The iced coffee is also quite good.
But most of us come here because of the CKT served lopsided on the plate.
My third favourite moment is standing near the stall and watching the guy fry the koay teow. It takes him 30 seconds from the time the garlic hits the sizzling oil to the time he scoops the stuff onto the plate.
My second favourite moment is when the plate arrives and I use my chopsticks to open up the clump of moist noodles. The smell of garlic chilli wafts upwards, carried aloft by a geyser of heat from the wok absorbed by the noodles.
My favourite moment is the first bite of the noodles. Followed by the second bite. And third.
And toward the end, you are left with the crunchy, springy prawn. Yes, some people eat CKT because of the prawn. Sure, I love the prawns too.
But first things first.
I always leave the best bite to the last: the koay teow. What amazes me is that the last bite still tastes as good as...

The highlight of this kopitiam is the char koay teow. Even though it’s not your usual fare with the obligatory cockles, spring onions and Chinese sausage, people still flock to it because it’s pretty good. The really large prawns are also an attraction. If you order the “special” at RM14, you’re in a for a treat with 6 large prawns.
I also tried the lor mee here and found it to be good, albeit a little too sweet. The Hokkien Mee was passable.
It’s a little away from town, so it’s best left to times when you’re in...
