Hoong Kong Boy Restaurant Penang Char Kway Teow, charcoal, duck egg and lard powered. And our pick for the best char kway teow in Johor, and yes even Singapore.

Uncle Huang is a jovial and friendly hawker here, and diligently cooks every plate without rushing nor consolidating multiple orders here. And that makes all the difference.

Not to be confused with the other Penang ckt stall at the food street which we also sampled, this is fully charcoal fired. And hence, it takes not only greater skill, but a great deal of patience too.

The cockles are also fresh and plump and the cockle juice that is infused into this plate of greatness is also what makes it extra tasty.

And because charcoal takes much more time to fry to get everything properly cooked, the resulting plate is also more complete and defined as you can’t really describe the divine amalgamation of flavours that is ckt.

And do order the duck egg variant for only a ringgit more (9 for normal eggs and 10 for the duck egg) as the extra egg fragrance will simply elevate this already delicious dish even further.

He also uses lard oil to lubricate the rice noodles and you get that luxurious slurpy texture to every strand. Extra points for this every time someone decides to use a healthier fat to cook this dish.

Nothing needs more to be said except come here yourself and savour this Penang delicacy in Johor and we dare say it’s as good, if not better than some of the more famous ones in Georgetown.

Watching Uncle Huang fry this classic dish is also highly therapeutic and it is gastronomic poetry in delicious motion. And makes eating it even better.

A definite winner.

Came here after my disappointing meal at Jaya Food Center. Tried the Char Kuey Teow, Satay, Frog and Otah.

Otah(stall 1) not bad. Honestly taste similar in JB cos probably from same supplier. Do not fancy them using stapler over toothpicks.

Satay (stall 2) tried their Beef & Chicken. All RM1 each. I would say it’s decent, but the peanut sauce ruined it for me. It made the satay too sweet.

Char Kuey Teow (stall 3) was surprisingly my favourite. Had a taste of wok hei & came with plenty of ingredients. Only problem was RM8 for large & RM7 for small. I ordered the large one & it didn’t look that big. At least it tasted nice.

Finally the Frog (forgot which stall, located at the Center of the whole stretch). It was pure disappointment. I initially went there & they told me I needed to wait 30min as they have ran out of frogs. Thinking this was a good sign that their frogs are good, I ordered one to try. When it came, it was utter sadness. The frog came in a metal bow which is not what I’m used to seeing, it usually comes in a claypot from my past experience. The frog was severely overcooked, the meat tasted like tough chicken, half the time when I’m eating, I keep doubting whether it is even frog or was it just chicken. Wanted to let my friend who has nvr tried frog before to try but this is way subpar to any of the frogs I’ve ever eaten. Pls avoid. Part of me feels bad becos I see a small girl helping her parents run the stall, but at the same time, unless u go there to do charity work, I wouldn’t go there expecting good food.

Overall, can only recommend the Char Kuey Teow stall. & strongly recommend against the...

Kopitiam with various foods. So far, I like the fruit rojak, very special compared to other places. Fried Kueh tiaw mee by an old aunty also nice (daytime only) buy have to wait for at least 15 to 20 mins. Abam balik crispy type is very nice, not too sweet, can last for few hours. Their Iced Coffee also not bad.

Street food at night at behind of this kopitiam is very happening at night. The place is not hot, windy. Good place. Various foods. Fried lobak 炒萝卜糕 stall is nice. Got a stall sell everything at RM11 (3 layer pork with salty vege + white rice & 1 egg) by an old aunty uncle couple is also good.

Few stalls that sell very NOT TASTY foods. Pork satay stall at middle of row is super super not nice, the satay is dry & tasteless. Cendol RM5 also super not nice, totally...
