Saw an article written by The Malay Mail that Dai Be Steam Fish Head is home to the best Char Kuey Tiao and Wanton Mee in all of KL, so we decided to try it out at around 10am on a Thursday morning. It's a coffee shop by day, and steamed fish restaurant by night. The open aired establishment was already swarmed with old aunties and uncles seemingly residing nearby, chatting away and seeming very familiar with the stall owners and area. There are also countless sellers/beggars who came up to our table to sell random items during our rather short dining experience.
The Char Kuey Tiao didn't live up to expectations. Though it had a nice wok hei, it wasn't anything mind-blowing nor spectacular. We were unable to try the Wanton Mee as they had sold out, which was a surprise given how early it still was. Instead, we ordered the Sam Kan Cheong Dry Pork Ball Noodles (RM10) which were pretty mediocre. The noodle texture wasn't very good, and the overall flavours were simple. Overall, the food was just okay. Pretty normal kopitiam that you can find at many other places. Curious if our opinions would change if we dined here at...

First attempt given the other more famous shop was not open yet. Pleasantly surprised with the good. We ordered 2 fish heads i.e. normal steam (ching cheng) and another with sauce (cheong cheng). Found the latter to be better albeit the former has a significant chinese wine taste amongst the ginger. Fish head was medium sized and for RM38 each, can't complain. Tried the chicken breast cubes fried in dried chili which was also good.
Pricing is really good. Only issue is the cleanliness which can be improved. It may also get a bit warm. Service by the foreigner boys was ok.
Parking was easy as we were early. Could sense that it will be a problem latter in the day as restaurants were starting to place tables and chairs on the vacant parking spots. Come early if you do not want to have...
Read moreFirst of all, parking situation is horrendous. There are some double Ma-Parkers who literally dumped their vehicles just to taupau some charsiew, roast duck or something like that which causes unnecessary jams for other road users. So to avoid such unpleasant situations, try not to be there during lunch hours or park along nearby streets and do some walking.
The char-kueh-teow is really good and rest days are every 2nd Wednesdays (which is twicw a month). For 3 juicy prawns, it is only RM10 and while it a bit oily, it is still yummy. There are other stalls but the main attraction is probably the steam fish. The kopi C (RM3.20) is okay but could be improved with a bit more of C.
It is quite easy to find this shop as it is the corner unit. The signage is almost obscured by the large tree but it is for a good cause. Whilst it was baking hot outside, the tree really provided a good shade to keep the heat from the...
