Hainan coffee - on the first sip, stronger tea taste than coffee. Tasted choco at the bottom. What a surprise. Not too sweet which is nice.
Nasi lemak - presentable. Sambal is fragrant and light spicy but then a little too watery. Fried chicken skin is crispy and no frozen meat taste which you can see from the bones. The fried chicken has a similar taste to some of the famous brand. The amount of peanut and ikan bilis is quite little.
Curry noodles with huang ting mian. The curry has a strong overpowering lemongrass taste. The soup is thick. One sip of the soup, your entire palate is numb. Ingredients included are substantial. I do not recommend to pair this dish with curry. The noodle is on the thinner side and soft(lack of texture). It tends to tangle together and tough to be separated which made your bite a mouthful.
Kaya butter toast is definitely pricey (RM3.50) for a set. The bread is narrower than the usual size. BUT is delicious. The kaya is flavourful and the size of butter is reasonable. The butter used is on the softer side so with the remaining heat on the bread, the butter became melty and made the handling quite messy (this is very personal). One big no no, no gloves when handling the bread and the butter. The maker just push the butter into the bread wit...
Read moreVisited on a holiday Monday around 930am, already packed with people. Parking depends on luck. Seats are limited, but staff was efficient to arrange. It seems like a family-based coffee shop, with a few foreign workers. Hailam coffee is amazing! I love the frothy layer on top, it’s not too sweet and has a well balanced bitterness and sweet chocolatey taste, with creamy texture! Toasted bread was as per usual, bread is nice but kaya is not the best, only plain sweetness. The butter slices melted almost immediately and dripped all over, making a mess. Maybe won’t recommend the toast… The service was pretty slow, be prepared to wait during peak hours. Nasi Lemak was decently nice, fluffy fragrant rice, nice crispy not-too-salty anchovies, crunchy peanuts and fried eggs with runny yolk, what’s to complain about? The sambal is not too sweet nor spicy, a decently well sambal. The rendang chicken is nicely marinated, the rendang sauce is very flavourful and the meat is tender. The fried chicken seems nice too, it’s freshly fried and smelled really delicious. Would come again...
Read moreHeard about this place and was told that their Hainan coffee is one a kind and very "kow".
Also, a must try is the toast bread. They also serve nasi lemak, bihun, and peranakan kuehs.
Verdict?
The coffee is indeed one a kind because it's mixed by the lady boss herself daily. It has some chocolatey taste which doesn't mask the coffee taste.
Once coffee finished means they are out for the day so be sure to order whatever you want upfront. I made that mistake when I wanted to pack their iced coffee back for dinner.
In the end, I got their cham ice for dinner. It's also the first time I've been to coffee shop that packs their food in a small bucket that you get to take away.
The toast kaya toast bread is also crispy with enough butter to drool down your mouth haha...
Parking is a challenge here though. A really big challenge.
