I visited Restoran Hong Lok on the 20th Sept on a Friday morning. This local coffeeshop is located at Laluan Gunung Rapat 3 in Ipoh and is a popular spot known for its diverse range of local Chinese and Muslim dishes.
The coffee shop has a bustling atmosphere, especially in the mornings, attracting both locals and visitors.
It's one of those classic, no-frills eateries where you can get a genuine taste of Ipoh's food culture.
The restaurant features a variety of stalls offering different specialties. Some of the popular options include Hong Kong-style Chee Cheong Fun, curry noodles, fried noodles, wanton noodles, porridge, dim sum, pan mee, and chicken rice.
Despite the wide selection, the quality of the dishes can be a bit hit or miss. For example, the Chee Cheong Fun and chicken rice I tried were decent but didn’t quite meet my expectations, especially if you’re accustomed to Singaporean standards.
The chicken, likely sourced from local farms where the chickens are free-roaming, was tougher and more muscular compared to what I'm used to.
That said, the nasi ayam nasi lemak and ban mian were quite enjoyable, offering a comforting meal that pairs well with the aromatic local coffee.
One of the highlights of the experience is the vibrant and lively atmosphere, which makes it a great place to immerse yourself in the local food scene.
The service is efficient, and although the coffee shop is often crowded, it adds to the authentic, bustling vibe.
Restoran Hong Lok is an excellent choice for those looking to experience a wide range of Ipoh’s local flavors in one place.
It’s worth a visit for the variety alone, but keep in mind that not every dish may be to your liking, especially if you have a preference for a more tender texture in meats.
Overall, it's a good spot for breakfast or brunch if you want to explore local food in a casual,...
Read moreOld school coffee shop which is very loud, active and busy. Lots of locals and have an array of food. Ordered the char kwey teow, curry laksa, porridge and dimsum. The char kwey teow is overrated. Not tasty by KL/Penang standards but had large prawns and some smoky taste - which is not wok hei unfortunately. The curry laksa was similarly overrated. Pricing was not cheap and I could certainly get better in KL for the same price. The curry stall lady owners were not the most friendliest either hence suggest to give this a pass if you visit. The porridge was probably the best out of the 3 main meals. The dimsum shop is famous for the large pau. There is a constant queue of customers ordering take aways. It is not too bad and similarly not cheap. Parking in vicinity is difficult but those willing to walk, then it is fine.
1 time experience and not a restaurant that deserves a revisit based on the food quality...
Read moreFood is quite good. Tried their Kai Se Hor Fun (shredded chicken noodle soup) and prawn Mee. Both were ok. I usually like my prawn Mee slightly spicier and more aromatic. The Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun texture was good but the sauce was slightly less flavourful. Dim sum was ok. Overall this place is worth trying if you are at this area. Coffee was good, a plus point for me. Good thing was this place still has plenty of food despite it being late in the morning. Tips for tourist, if you have brunch here then you can enjoy another famous cendol right facing the main road, then head down to the highway and back to KL....
