Heard a lot of good things about this place. Needless to say, my brothers and I poured over the menu before deciding on the following : Country fried chicken (7/10) It's nice I will say. Being a fried chicken lover I cannot help but to compare it to the many others that I have tried. So I will just say that I will order this dish again the next time I'm there. I do like the crispy skin and it's freshly fried unlike those you get at KFC and the dreaded McD. The Classic Meatloaf (3/10) Oh dear no, if this is how the Midwest like their meatloaf, I am repelled by it. It's the worst as the meatloaf that I love is more savory and has more meat to it. This one basically tastes like sweet bread that crumbles easily. Nope, sorry. Thankfully both my brothers like it so I moved on to the next dish immediately. Sausage Platter (8/10) I love this dish. There were 4 types of huge and thick sausage served. I digged into all for of them and liked all of them. Don't remember their names but yes, the highlight of my dinner. The Mac n Cheese (9/10) This was another highlight of my dinner. You can't go wrong Mac n Cheese and Betty delivered this spectacularly well. The buried macaroni among the sticky cheese is a totally fun experience for all who tried to dig in. Yummy!
The sides Minestroni soup (I assume and it gets a 6/10). This was just ok and I wouldn't order it again the next time I'm there. Mashed potatoes (7/10). Sorry but after Hungry Bacon, this will have to settle at 7. Peas, there were green peas everywhere! Not my fave beans/vegetables so I'm not giving it a score. Coleslaw (8/10) I like Betty's coleslaw. It's neither too sweet nor too sourish in taste. Yes I don't mind this at all.
I would like to go back to Betty's again and try the other dishes. I am curious about her beef brisket, the pork ribs and...
Read moreThree of us came for dinner based on recommendation from friends. We ordered the grain fed sirloin seat, fish and chips, pork chops and the meatloaf. We had apple crumble and 2 coffees for dessert Yeah we were hungry!
sirlion steak came first. We ordered medium rare but it came out medium. It was also strange that the steak was pre-sliced for us. Like we don’t have teeth to chew! The colour was bland. We feel that steaks must be grass fed. This was grain fed.
The fish and chips were not great. It was the last dinner to arrive so we know it was fried fresh. The batter wasn’t exactly crisp like regular beer batters. A little disappointing. The tomato salsa and tartar sauce were good. Fries were not crispy but chewy.
Pork chops were a real disappointment. We got 3 slices of pork chops, mash potato and coleslaw blanketed in some bland brown gravy. The pork chops were dry. The gravy saved it. The gravy drenched the whole dish.
Meatloaf was interesting. It was very orange which came from the grated carrots. I always thought meatloaf was beef but this was pork. It was the dish with the best colour. The same ubiquitous brown gravy drenched the mash potato. It was a tasty dish except that the texture was a little soft.
You cannot really mess up coffee. The apple crumble was a deconstructed dish. The chopped apples were on dish and there was crumble on top with ice cream. It was good. Not enough crumble though.
We were curious about a dish called “dog food”. We could not get an explanation on what it was. However we saw another table order it. The dish was drenched on that brown sauce!
Service was attentive by the waiters. There was a table that came in 5 or 10 minutes before closing and we saw a “sien” look from one of the waiters.
Will we be back? Yes to try burgers and the other...
Read moreThis pork-serving place can be considered an institution in the Aman Suria area, having been around for a while now. When it first started, it was a rarity to find non-halal full service restaurants apart from the kopitiams and Chinese restaurants. As a testimony to its longevity, I've seen competing restaurants that opened nearby come and go, but Betty's remains, even surviving through the pandemic that decimated a lot of the competition.
The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating with comfortably spaced tables inside. Nicely decorated with lots of knick-knacks and posters, you're constantly reminded that the restaurant is non-halal!
As the name implies, the restaurant serves wholesome American eats - barbecued, grilled, fried and cooked meats, burgers, salads and ribs - all deliciously done right. From simple bites like their "Dog Food" right through to their signature ribs, you can taste the quality in the meats used and freshness of the ingredients in every bite.
Having been a diner here for at least 15 years now, I have my own favourites from the menu (typical male behaviour), but I enjoy taking my family there and pick at their food which I wouldn't normally order (more typical man behaviour). Consistency is key, and I believe Betty's has met that requirement time and time again.
Menu prices are a little above average, but judging from the packed house every time I'm there, it's not a hindrance to food lovers who recognise that old saying "Good things are not cheap, cheap things are not good"
Oh, and if you're wondering if Betty exists - she does! Take a look at the pic included and see if you can spot her the next time you go there - say "Hi" and be greeted...
