For umpteen years, my wife and I have been fans of Raju's Banana Leaf since their original outlet in Jalan Gasing. We were sad when they closed down, but we were delighted to discover their new main branch in Taman Petaling. We have visited this place with a few members of the 'Family of 10' twice recently, once in December 2023 and once in February 2024, and both times we enjoyed a delicious and satisfying lunch.
The restaurant is quite popular, especially on weekends, so be prepared to wait for a table and your food. But trust me, it is worth it. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the food is fresh and flavourful. You can choose from a variety of drinks, such as teh tarik, lime juice, or lassi. The banana leaf rice comes with three types of vegetables, papadum, rasam, and your choice of curry. You can also add your preferred protein, such as fried chicken, fried fish, or mutton curry. My personal favourite is the fried ikan tenggiri, which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The fish curry is also very tasty and spicy, perfect for dipping the rice or the roti canai. The roti canai here is famous for being thin, flaky, and buttery. Don't forget to order some side dishes, such as the fried bitter gourd and the fried onion rings, which add some crunch and sweetness to your meal.
The prices are reasonable and affordable, considering the quality and quantity of the food. The portions are generous and filling, and you will leave with a happy stomach. The only downside is the parking, which can be difficult to find during peak hours. But if you can, try to carpool or take public transport to avoid the hassle.
Overall, Raju's Banana Leaf Main Branch is a great place to enjoy authentic and delicious banana leaf rice and fried seafood with your family and friends. It is one of our favourite spots for a leisurely and satisfying lunch, and we will come back again. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Indian cuisine and a...
Read moreWriting to share my experience cause it’s the worst banana leaf restaurant I’ve ever been
The food is mid (to the boomers, it means average) My friend and I ordered chicken masala but on the receipt it showed Paratal. Regardless, the chicken was served cold (-10 aura)
The banana leaves were served and while I was checking my phone waiting for my friend to come back from the restroom, one of the waiters just straight up put two kuih on our banana leaves without even asking. Imagine your Asian parents just put a college offer letter on the table that they have enrolled you in and expect you to study without asking for your opinion. Yup it’s exactly like that. After putting the kuih without asking me whether I wanted it, I was like “okay fine, you put it already and for me it’s not nice to ask to put it back” so I just accepted it. The other employees were fine as they did ask. But that ONE waiter continued to do so with the other kuih as he approached us by using the same technique of putting it on the leaves without asking and we were like nope that’s enough. We didn’t wanna spend more than we originally came for
At the cashier register, we paid via touch n go (they accepted it) even though they stated they receive cash only. For a restaurant like this, I expected there to be cashless payment stated explicitly. Like come on, even the road side mak cik has qr code
That experience of not being asked (cause I’ve been to other banana leaf restaurants and they will ask if you need anything before putting it on the plate) is considered rude to me as they did not respect our rights as customers. I’ll learn to stand firm and just say no and be badass about it and tell them to take the kuih of my plate cause it’s not what I asked for (and not being asked) that waiter is -1000000000 aura
P.S : someone who lives there told me that it’s a tourist trap and the other Indian restaurants around there has better food and services. So yeah listen...
Read moreWe visited this restaurant for the first time as we found a convenient parking spot nearby, but unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing.
We ordered the banana leaf meal, and to our surprise, basic items like rasam and tairu(curd) which are usually part of a standard set were charged separately. On top of that, there was noticeable hard-selling at the table.
One particular incident involved a soya jelly that was promoted to us. We placed it on our table but changed our minds shortly after and asked a staff member to take it back. It was still sealed in the small Tupperware and untouched. However, the foreign staff insisted it had already been entered into their system and that we could eat it after the meal. Only after we asked him to double-check with another Indian staff member did he return to collect it.
The cucumber salad served as part of the meal was also extremely bitter, which added to our disappointment with the food quality.
Also, in this cashless age, it was inconvenient that the restaurant only accepts cash with no QR code or card payment options.
While the restaurant is clean and the staff are attentive, the pricing and service didn’t meet expectations. If you’re looking for a meal with value, transparency, and comfort, this might not be the...
