From Tanjung Malim to PJ full with good food!
I stumbled upon this restaurant by coincidence. Many many years ago, back when Damansara Perdana was not as congested as it is today - no DASH highway cutting through the township, I still had to pay for my Citibank credit card bills via cash deposit machine at Metropolitan Square (those days mana ada online transfer or DuitNow) and there were many hidden gems waiting for be discovered.
Tired of going to the same eateries over and over again, I decided to drive around the commercial area and lastly along the stretch of PJU 8/5B where it was dark with the back row facing undeveloped land back then. I spotted this restaurant doing brisk business, went in and the rest was history. It quickly became one of my regular Chinese restaurants.
The chef and his brothers hail from the town of Tanjung Malim, and their restaurant has quickly garnered a strong following by the locals as well as outsiders. I'd come so many times that I'd lost count.. their strength is definitely river produce - be it river fish or freshwater prawns - as well as seafood and meat dishes.
◾pork lard rice - perhaps the most ordered dish in this restaurant. Served piping hot in a claypot after mixing with egg, pork lard and the ever aromatic pork oil, I always succumb to the temptations although I was not supposed to eat carb. ◾kau yuk mee hoon - another signature dish that made my knees weak. ◾deep fried calamari with salted egg yolk - common dish at restaurants and they did it good. ◾braised beancurd with minced meat - ordered this dish for the gravy. ◾claypot curry grouper fish head - not the best but commendable effort. I'm spoilt by better curry out there. ◾Braised pork leg with dried chilly - the presence of dried chilly gave the dish oomph! ◾Claypot braised pork belly -something to consider when out of idea on what to feed the kids. ◾Deep fried pork patty mixed with salted fish - the young ones still couldn't accept salted fish so I could have it all. ◾Steamed kampung chicken with bamboo salt which was not overly salty but rather appetising. ◾Steamed squid & clam Thai style - it had this slight bitter aftertaste which I didn't like ◾spinach in superior soup - what dish is better than this? I could enjoy the green and soup at the same time. ◾Stir fried vegetable
Before someone start asking on the price, it's not expensive but not exactly cheap - somewhere in between which I'm happy to pay considering the quality. Come weekend, please reserve ahead - you'd...
Read moreWas looking for a parking in this dreaded area. Plenty of restaurants but limited parking. Malaysian mentality .. only park your car if you can see it. 😁 just so happen that there’s a car reversing. So I’m destined to dine here and in we went. The first thing I saw was the owner/chef with Wok with Yan standee, can’t be bad right? Place was empty @ 1155
Ordered vegetable dish, chicken, roasted pork and claypot pork lard rice.
Vegetable dish (Buddha something) - 😱 the best I’ve had in years. Very strong wok hei! Delicious to say the least. RM24
Slated egg chicken - yummy! Crunchy, hot and tasty. RM24
Fried roasted pork - this one so-so only. Too sweet for my liking but the cucumber 👍🏼 RM18
Claypot pork lard rice - very fragrant! Rice was dancing when it was served. Just wished there were more pork lards on the rice. RM10
Place was air conditioned and clean. Not many tables. Parking depends on your luck. Tables were filled up by 1230. Total bill came up to be RM88 with 2 iced Chinese tea and 1 white rice. Saw people ordered noodles .. very tempting even after my lunch. Will be back...
Read moreWun Nam is a place that never disappoints. Tried several times and so far the food and service is on point. Some of the personal favourites are:
Claypot pork lard rice - best to get this if you're in a big group Stir fried ladies finger with lime sauce - so appetising with a hint of sour and spiciness and goes so well with rice Braised pork mee hoon - usually not a fan for this type of noodles but Wun Nam changed my perception. Theirs is not so oily and doesnt have the cloying feeling. Even the frozen meal for this is good. Worth getting it home Fresh water prawn wat dan hor - the gravy is really eggy and thick, not the watered down type. Homemade taufoo - love the crispy exterior with the bouncy soft interior. The minced pork topping goes well too
Service is attentive and prompt. Food is served quite fast too despite the crowd during peak hours. They also have frozen meal and portion is good enough for 2-3 pax.
This place is definitely worth revisiting. They have so much more on their...
