This is review before march 2025 Overall 4 stars Food 4 stars Service 3 stars Atmosphere 2 stars A Hidden Gem Behind Iconik: Simple Home-Cooked Flavors
Located discreetly behind Iconik, this restaurant offers a straightforward dining experience centered around home-style Thai and Chinese cuisine. After four visits, here’s a detailed breakdown of what you can expect:
🌤 Atmosphere: 2/5 The open-air concept, equipped with ceiling fans and a covered roof, is functional but can be warm during the day. Evening visits are more comfortable, as the cooler temperatures and breeze enhance the overall experience.
🍽 Service: 3/5 Service here is practical and efficient. Dishes arrived promptly, typically within 10 minutes of placing an order. While there’s no emphasis on presentation or extra flourishes, the staff gets the job done effectively.
🥢 Food: 4/5 The menu leans heavily on familiar Thai and Chinese flavors, with a focus on comfort and simplicity. Here’s a review of some of the dishes:
Stir-Fried Kangkung with Shrimp Paste (4/5): Fresh and well-executed, the belacan adds a bold, savory kick to the crisp kangkung. This is one of the better dishes on the menu.
Steamed Chicken (3/5): Tender and lightly seasoned, the chicken pairs well with their robust garlic paste. A reliable, if unremarkable, option but expensive half chicken about rm39
Char Siew (3/5): Crispy and flavorful, but inconsistent. While some pieces are perfectly cooked, others are too hard to enjoy.
Tioman Fish with Bitter Gourd (2/5): Disappointing due to its small portion size, lack of freshness, and overpriced nature. The frying didn’t help redeem it. Not recommended.
Taufu with Prawns (2/5): Average at best. The sauce masks the tofu’s flavor, making it palatable, but it lacks any standout qualities.
💰 Price: 3/5 For three dishes, the bill came to RM70 and on my 4th visit 4 dish about rm120 .While this pricing is reasonable for the portion sizes and overall quality, it’s not exceptional.
🚗 Parking: 3/5 Parking behind Iconik can be challenging, especially during busy hours. An alternative is to park at the nearby Sri Sakthi Easwari Temple (a two-minute walk). However, avoid this option on Monday and Friday evenings due to the night market.
🏠 Final Thoughts For those seeking simple, home-cooked meals with no-frills service, this restaurant is worth considering, especially during its operating hours (5:30 PM to 8:30 PM for dinner or 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM for lunch, closed on Tuesdays). While some dishes are standout, others fall short, so choose wisely—particularly...
Read moreThe social media whispers for this place for the foodies-on-the-know is almost an urban legend of sorts. I have heard rumours on the difficulty in securing a portion of their highly touted tor-dei-char-sieu so much so that my first time here was filled with apprehension. Rest assured, all you'll need to do is come here early to avoid order backlog and find a good table spot.
Yes, the aforementioned tor-dei barbequed pork is as good as what many has claimed it to be. But if I was hard pressed, I would think it's a very very good variation of the equally incredible char sieu from some of the landmark roast pork stalls or eateries around the old Pudu area in KL. In my opinion, the other dishes also shine just as brightly. And it's an instant flashback to my childhood experiences enjoying home-cooked dishes by my aunties who dished out similar offerings from their kitchens during big Chinese festivals. If you think the asking prices here are a little high I would think it's entirely reasonable since I got a taste of my childhood enjoying a leisure weekend luncheon here. Very highly recommended all the...
