My wife and I and younger son Calvin 's family went to Kuala Kubu Baru last Sunday to unwind as the previous day 27 April 2024 was nomination Day for the KkB by-election so the crowd was not there anymore, many shops were closed and roads on town centre were full of temporary tents from the Nomination Day crowd to patronise various food and handicrafts. First we visited The Goddess of Mercy located about 2km from town then it was about noon so we went to KKB town to look for a restaurant to have our lunch. As most of the shops were closed and we managed to find Wong Ng Kee Restaurant. The food in this restaurant is typical Hainese and you know what? The owner is a 80+ years old man and his wife who was a waitress taking orders is also in the 80's and the waiter and 3 chefs are also in their 80's heh heh heh. At first my wife and I were asked to be seated on the 5-foot way because the restaurant was full of customers and the time was 1.45 pm. After some times we managed to find a table to dine in. As I said earlier 🤣 the restaurant was full of customers and we waited until about 3.00pm to get our dishes. I fully recommend this restaurant if you ever visit KK to unwind and relax. After our lunch we adjourned to Taman Tasik Mellinium playground for the kids to play at the giant Dinosaur 🦕🦖 slides. And my wife and I sat on the shedy swings to enjoy the breeze and watching the...

It is heartwarming to see 5 octagenarians decided to open for business and serve true blue old school hainanese food to tourists in a small town like KKB.
Times are tough in this economic environment. You can see the willingness to serve as accurate (per order) and the eagerness to work as fast (slow walking) as they want - appreciate the effort!
They are supposed to be enjoying their retirement life. Yet here they are cooking us a table full of delicious food - wanton soup, pork chop, chicken chop, gong nam noodle 🍜 (1 hour of waiting + 5 mins of slaying)
If you're hungry, you will get hangry waiting for your food. If you're setting expectations with your KL (insert any "world class" city wherever you're from) standards, your food will not come out in 15 minutes. If you're in a rush, don't come here. If you have no respect for the old, stay out.
Rule 1 of dining out: be nice. Rule 2 of dining out: don't be rude.
I'm sure the group of aunties and uncles from the restaurant will not read this review. But I'm sure they are not bothered by their order screwups (and even low star review) today, and will continue to sip their hainanese teh in this nice cooling town, enjoying the sunset as they close...
Read moreSince 1940 and it does look 1940 (Pre WW2 yo!) All the people working there are older than me, I am 55yr! They were super friendly....... well if you want to say.. Very Auntie Like! They try to have a real conversation with us, it was so busy after the lunch hour that Sunday... so we had some chit chats. Really love the old school?? I call it FOOD this uncle ate each time I got good result in school at Yik Kee (KL Hainanese Chicken Legendary shop), The difference?? Today Yik Kee cooked by foreign workers? served by foreign worker? Aunties still cooking at Wong Ng Kee...... be sad to see and say as well. I saw no young ppl around, meaning this will be gone......... well, when the aunties no longer here. Sad eh? Chicken Chop was nicely battered, not sweet too thick,, sauce don't taste like Maggi haha. BUT I really love their Pork Chop with caramelized onions in brown sauce. Their other signature is the Wan Tan Dumpling soup. Its fillings are nice once again not salty.
It was a really wonderful lunch. Thank you aunties and uncle.
