FOCUS - Dong Po Yuk!!!
It was during a dinner conversation at, Woo Ng Kee, that I got to know about this restaurant. The home minister's aunt who has lived in Kepong most of her life casually said "Oh, do you know that there's a good place nearby to eat dong po yuk? It's a private kitchen." That pigued my curiosity and I quickly did research and found 我们天 or "I Ask Heaven" (in English). But their English name was Oh My God Private Kitchen - why they name this remains a mystery to me. Maybe they want everyone to exclaim "Oh My God!" after eating their famous meat?
We arrived way earlier before their opening time for dinner which was 5.30pm as I didn't want to get caught in the rush hour traffic. The restaurant was different from what I would have imagined based on the name itself, but it's all good. A typical Chinese restaurant located at corner shoplot that opens for breakfast, lunch & dinner.
◾Dong Po Yuk - no kidding! Probably one of the best meat I've eaten.. melt-in-the-mouth texture, and the gravy to me was close-to-perfection (at least for me) - savoury and not too sweet with the right consistency. They were kind enough to include fried sliced potato when they saw the 3 kids in the family. Those were gone in matters of second when the potato soaked in the delicious gravy. I couldn't resist taking few scoops of rice with the gravy too. Someone added an extra bowl because of this. ◾Salted Fried Chicken - using only thigh meat, the skin was crispy while the meat remained moist & juicy. Love the saltiness of the meat but the only thing missing was the chilly sauce. ◾Curry chicken - served in claypot and the taste although not the best, it reminded me of the curry chicken that my grandmother used to cook for me when I was small. It tasted just like what I used to eat and for that, I missed her again! ◾stir fried lala with petai - I appreciated their effort in picking the clam meat off the shells before stir frying with the petai. Lovely dish. ◾deep fried tilapia with bittergourd and black dace sauce - the sauce was OK but the doneness of the bittergourd was good.. not too hard nor too soft. Overshadowed by the pork obviously. ◾Dried vegetable soup - check with them on the soup of the day. We had this - the didn't skimp on the ingredients as the flavour of dried vegetable was prominent, and there was sweetness from the pork and chicken meat used. ◾stir fried vegetable - we whacked everything while it's hot!
OK... Here's the catch! DO NOT expect 5-star services or for your dishes to be served quickly. Being the first table of the day, we waited for more than half an hour before the first dish was placed right in front of us. Maybe they haven't prepared the ingredients yet, as we were too early 🤷🏻 be patient.
Total bill came to RM169 which I considered reasonable.
For the dong po yuk.. definitely oh my god! They told me that they had been featured few times in newspaper before. All dishes taste just like home cooked and we left the...
Read moreOur family used to come here quite often for breakfast as the noodles were quite good, the prices reasonable, and the portions generous. However, over the last 3–4 visits, we kept facing the same problems. The quality of the food has dropped a lot — one of our family members always orders the Pork Noodle, so we know the usual taste and quality, but lately the pork has been smelly (not fresh). The tofu in the Yong Tau Foo Noodle has also started to taste sour, and the portions have become smaller.
We have been eating here regularly for a long time, at least once or twice a week, so we were very disappointed to find the same issues again and again. If it happened only once in a while, it could be overlooked, but the last few visits over the past months have all been like this.
On top of that, they no longer turn on the air-conditioning. The restaurant is enclosed with no windows, and with just fans it feels very stuffy and uncomfortable. There are also more flies now, and it feels strange that they switch off the lights in a section as soon as diners leave, even though the place is quite small.
We can also see that business has become slower compared to before, so we truly hope the owners can do something about the current conditions. Based on our recent experiences, we have decided not to come...
